Does sound-meditation work for you?

One of the small unpaid jobs I do is to write book and CD reviews for a UK spiritual magazine. I am allowed to keep what I review as payment in kind. I am presently checking out a sound-meditation CD. I was really looking forward to bathing in beautiful sounds and being led away into other realms on a wave of sheer pleasure but I just ended up annoyed and nearly dropping off!
As a Clairaudiant Medium, I am highly sensitive to sound and vibration and find some sound-meditations really get on my chakras in an adverse way! Don't get me wrong. I love good sounds, fabulous music and wonderful singing but just listening to the occasional ting does nothing for me!
How about you?

last year I did a very lovely meditation that involved tibetan singing bowls and some very lovely incense that I would dearly like to get my hands on. I found it very effective.
a lot of the music people find useful for meditation don't work that well for me. one of my favourites is actually the soundtrack to a Spa massage. that and ocean or storm sounds work quite well for me. chanting can be quite good, but I find that most new agey music doesn't work for me that well.
I've recently been emailed asking if I want to review some oracle cards, so that could be interesting.

I like Tibetan Singing Bowls too but I have never done a meditation with them. I will one day, I'm sure. I have several lovely CDs of Nature-sounds and, like you, that does it far better for me.
I hope the oracle cards are an interesting experience for you.
Blessings on your journey!

I don't think it would work for me I need quiet; no noise. I wouldn't mind the sounds of birds though. Daniele

Yes, I find birdsong very relaxing too. It makes me feel as if I am outside communing with Nature even though I can hear the sound of traffic around me while I'm in the house!

Yes, sound-meditation really works especially when you listen to songs that you like , it really brings inner peace within you and the feeling that your harmony within you is replenished and revitalized :)

I agree! I feel marvellous after I have listened to wondrous harmonious sounds. I recently attended a Mind Body Spirit Festival in London, UK, and listened to some fabulous singing that transported me to another world. I even found that I was starting to connect with The Spiritual Realms as I closed my eyes to listen, and had to pull myself back into this one!

Well..
Yes it has done for me when ever I have done. In India there are certain yoga which is so beneficial when we do that in sound of some certain recital or raga.
These yoga called Naad-Yoga.
I am also planning to write a blog for that as recently I prepared a PPT for my Guruji(Master) for a conference based on that and it was really interesting to know many things.
Though I am habitual of another sound based meditation, where we try to feel inner sound and that is spiritual meditation.
If you would need any help regarding Indian sound based meditation then you can PM me...I will try to suggest some raga which can be very useful for certain yoga.
Thanks.

I love to meditate with music, be it music CDs or drumming myself. And there are a few meditations that include visuals, such as Reiki or Native American that I enjoy. Now and again I do come across one that disturbs me. I think part of the reason is that each of us are different and another may be that we are out of balance with something and that's how we realize there is an issue. But again, that's like assuming everyone will like the same types of music.
Even if it is a non paying job, it sounds pretty nice.

What I have heard so far isn't much. but I was unimpressed. I am trying to keep an open mind. I find that what works for me is reading and visualzation just before I meditate.

I had never done meditation before and for my first experience I didn't know what to expect, we did it in a group and were asked to lie on the floor in a circle, and the sound of the ocean was playing softly in the background and the meditator was talking us through a journey, I remember having great trouble concentrating and my mind would drift off away from the sound of the waves and the meditator and I began to think about unrelated mundane things, like what I needed at the shops, I just couldn't relax. Even with breathing exercises I found difficult. I did go to a Buddhist Retreat but again meditation didn't work for me. However that being said, in the past when I have been stressed through work or relationships I have put Enya on and laid in a hot bath and that has relaxed me and cleared my mind. So maybe it's the type of music, the environment and whether I am on my own or not.

i have some monks singing gregorian chants. i have a couple of other cds offering relaxation, but i like the monks best, i have been thinking about getting some more, maybe some hildegard de bingen, as i would quite like some female voices, for a change.
but i don't listen to much instrumental music anyway, i quite like bach, but i actually prefer the human voice. though i did once have a really nice cd of relaxing music, only i lost it, and can't remember anything about it, except the sound of rushing waves, so i tried a couple of others, but i think you are right that its a very personal thing, some work for us and some don't.
