Do you paint the ceiling in the kitchen...

I just bought my first home and am wanting to do some interior painting. I have chosen a plum/red/maroon color (sounds odd but really nice) It is a large kitchen, but with cabinets hanging from the ceiling in a U-shape and counters/tops in the same U-shape so there isn't much "wall" space. Mainly just between the countertops and the hanging cabinets. Question...do I paint the ceiling the red color too? Or leave it the off white color it already is? It has a large inset of flourscent lighting on the ceiling so there isn't really much of that either! I am thinking not, have watched lot of design shows and they never painted the ceilings, but could have been just for that project. Generally speaking...do you paint the ceiling the same color as the walls no matter the color of the walls?

I have to say that a dark ceiling can have a lowering effect. However, you might look into painting it a lighter tint of your color since it isn't a large area that would be painted.

Well that's an idea. Lighter color...I'll give that some thought! Thanks!

Hi coffeebreak, I am far from being an interior decorator. But most of the ceilings I have seen are always a white, off white, or cream color. And yes you can paint ceilings as a matter of fact mine need painting now. And one of these days I will get them painted. They are dingy and in need of a paint job. I have a few spots that have been repaired from leaks and they need painting. I will go with a white color, that is the color my ceiling is now. I hope some other responder can give you more advice on this. Be blessed.

I guess I should have clarified that...do I paint the ceiling the SAME color as the red color I am doing the walls with? Ceiling is now an off white and the cabinets ara a blond wood and the ceiling recessed light fixture is "framed" with the same blonde wood.
