Starchy foods such as potatoes, bread and rice may increase the risk of breast cancer returning, a study has found. Scientists studied the diets of 2,651 breast cancer survivors, focusing on carbohydrates. They found that carbohydrates in general - and especially starches - were linked to the risk of new tumours. The rate of recurrence was 14.2% among women who increased their starch intake most during one year. In contrast, women who decreased their starch consumption the most saw a 9.7% recurrence rate. "The results show that it's not just overall carbohydrates, but particularly starch," said researcher Jennifer Emond, from the University of California at San Diego, in the US. "Women who increased their starch intake over one year were at a much likelier risk for recurring."
