Have You Had At Least One Cavity?

So, I got into an argument with my mother. And I got so fed up with her because she told me she knows nobody that had at least one cavity. And honestly, most of my friends have had at least onen cavity in their life time. I ended up telling her she was annoying and plain wrong and I hate arguing with my mother. It all started because I complained about my tooth hurting. she said it could be due to me grinding my teeth at night. Who knows. Yet she complained that if it was a cavity, it was because I don't use the spin brush. I use a regular tooth brush instead. Here I am, 20 years old and haven't had a cavity. And I bet plenty of 20 year olds have had more than one cavity. My mother disagrees. So let's see now, have you had at least one cavity?

3 At sixteen, hungover dentist "forgot" to freeze one of the teeth...didn't go back to a dentist for almost 8 years, and that one was shocked I only had 3 more...especially with my dental hygiene habits, which really are horrid.
Many people get cavities, most of what you believe to be a truth, is what you want to be a truth, so your subconscious mind only finds evidence to support your truth, at least that is what the psychologists seem to be telling me.
Sincerely and With Appreciation,
Chysom Scott.

I'd apologize, but I am not sorry, for getting philosophical. And yes, I hate surgical accidents, but I understand people are people, and we make mistakes, I just don't think some are excusable.
Like that one, or losing a watch/ring during heart surgery, shouldn't be behaving in that matter. Some that are fairly excusable would be...well, I haven't much experience in that area, so I wouldn't know. But I would guess, that placing a stitch to close together would be a reasonable one.

You went all philosophical on me. Nice!
But yikes. Stupid hungover dentist. I hate surgical accidents, don't you?

If you had a cavity, it is due to genetic predisposition as much as to what kind of tooth brush you have. Has your mother had your teeth sealed as a child? My kids did not have cavities before they were twenty, but I did. I did not have as good a nutrition as they did, and I had no dental care and I did not brush and my teeth were not sealed. It takes many things to make a cavity. Nutrition, care, brushing and so on.

Both of my daughters had zero cavities before age 21. I had zero also and have had only 3 my entire life so far. I'm over 50, so feel taking care of your teeth is important in my family and should be for all of us.
Good dental care can save hundreds of thousands of dollars during your life time. I did wear braces for 4 long years and now am grateful my parents spent the money.

Yeah, I wore braces too. I think for 2 1/2 years. I'm grateful for that as well.
I'm hoping to never get a cavity. I do brush and floss daily.

Um, your mother is completely wrong, sorry to say that, but this topic has been going on since I had to have a tooth pulled last week, so I wonder if I started it???
Anyway, my son, who is 9, has 4 cavities due to not brushing when he was younger, but now he flosses and brushes twice a day. He use to use the spin brush, but hasn't used it in months and his last check up, he had no new cavities, (BTW, he is also not using fluoride toothpaste, that is a myth that it fights cavities and it is not good for you.)
I had a niece, who was given a bottle at bed time when she was a baby. By the time she was 5-6, she had to have many teeth pulled due to this.
Personally myself, I also had a few cavities when I was a kid, but now I don't, just poor professional dental care, which I am correcting now.
On the other hand, my older son, he got his first cavity at 25. I had a friend who told me she never had a cavity, (she was at least in her 30's)
So, whether it is inherited, diet, or how or often one brushes their teeth, doesn't mean they will or will not have a cavity as a child, or even as an adult..
I hope that helps..

Oh, and one more thing, if you are having pain, it wouldn't hurt to have it checked out just to be sure.
I know dentists are expensive, which is why I didn't go for a long time. But if I had, my dental bill wouldn't be as high as it is now.
See, if you only had a cavity, then it doesn't cost much at all to have it filled. If you let it go to where your only choice is to have it pulled, or a root canal and crown, well, it depends..It is cheaper to have it pulled if you want to loss your teeth. It is much more for a root canal and crown, (Just for a crown it runs 800.00) But if you go in and it is even too late for the root canal, then it will have to be pulled..
I tell you this, because I am trying to save my teeth, and have only lost one since I started going to the dentist. Thankfully it was a tooth in the back, but still, if you can keep your teeth, the better it will be for you later on in life..

I have had a cavity..but I never had any trouble until I got pregnant. It seems that the baby takes calcium from your teeth and can cause you to get one. I drank alot of milk plus stayed regular on my vitamins and apparently my baby needed more..lol...I would have turned into a cow if I had drank anymore milk than what I did.

Well, I didn't have any until I was about 30 years old. My teeth were OK but suddenly one day the dentist said I needed a filling. I went for it, and on my next visit, I had another, and then another and then another as the years went by. I haven't had one now for about 10 years, apart from one filling falling out last year, but that happens. I know people who have had none at all.. I wish I had taken more care back in my 20s, but that's life I guess. _Derek

Grinding your teeth can cause alot of problems. I have bad teeth. I was never taught how to take care of them. I have like twelve teeth left now. I want to get these extracted and get dentures. i don't see any reason to get a plate or anything just to do the other later on.

I'm not a dentist, and I'm no expert, but I think it's dependent on your eating habits. I for one didn't have any cavities before I turned 20.
My kids who are pretty much picky eaters, and are really into candies have had cavities. Even my 5 year old who just went to the dentist a month ago, has had one filled up.

Hi Stephanie Ann C: I must admit that I have more than just one cavity. I try to take care of my teeth brushing them and having good habits and of course going to the dentist but I could not control it. I think my teeth look good after all.

I didn't have a cavity until I was 25. And if you are griding your teeth, get a mouth guard. Otherwise you'll end up like me. I "grinded" my teeth so badly, the back ones don't have any enamel on them anymore. And I chipped one on the side of my mouth. All because of grinding. Thus, I now have a mouth guard.

hi stephanieAnnC oh yes as I was raised before they started the
floride thing so I had cavities in my teeth in my late teens. now days with water being fluoridated most youngsters have few if
any cavities.Your mom is wrong though as lots of young people do'get cavities. But at least you an your mom are not fighting over any
humongous wrong. she has to admit if you have a cavity it must be
taken care of . I would say your mom should be proud you have
never had a cavity as you seemed to have been well fed with
sound nutrition.I know when you are twenty moms can be a pain but bear with her she will grow on you in the next few years.
