Do you like group assignments?

Some time ago my psychology teacher gave us a group assignment. Our teacher asked us to imagine that we had to spend some time on an uninhabited island.
In the groups we had to discuss which things we would bring. We were only allowed to bring 3 things and we all had to agree about the things we decided to bring.
When we had spent about half an hour in the groups our teacher said: "You thought that this was an assignment about an uninhabited island, but you were wrong. It is not about an uninhabited island and I am not interested in hearing about the objects you chose. Throw way the paper that you wrote, because this is about YOU, and I want you to evaluate the way you worked together and evaluate your own roles in the group."
We were all very surprised, because we didn't know, that it was a an assignment about ourselves. It was the first time that I was asked to evaluate my own role in a group, but it was interesting to look at it from that perspective.
Are group assignments common in your schools? Do you like group assignments? Why/why not? Have you have ever been asked to evaluate your own role in a group?

Yes, I remember we did have that at some point in school. Group work is aimed at developing an individual's perspective of how to work with people, in a team. I learned that in a group we need to use everyone in the group no matter how weak they were in a certain aspect. There was this frail and shy kid at school, but was good at strategy, we managed to get him to work with us using what he could contribute in our little group projects. Everyone pitched in too with what they were good at and together we came out with impressive teamwork.

Yes, exactly, Porcospino. Great cities like yours, are built on teamwork. That's why it is vital to have group work started at a young age in school, so that the kids will see how team building can absolutely build anything. I have seen this team building when I was a kid, my dad waa an army engineer, and I have seened how people from different parts of my country work together to build bridges and roads, I was amazed at how this was possible. :)

You have some good points. I also think it is important that everyone contributes to the group work and do the things that they are good at. That way the group will really benefit from the different strengths that the group members have. No one is good at everything, but when we work together in a group we are able to combine the strengths that we have and make a great group project together. We are also able to inspire eachother and sometimes some of the other group members see things from a different perspective and get ideas that we would never have thought about if we were doing an idividual project.

I have been in a couple groups since I started college and it depends on the group.
My classes are all online, so my first group, the instructor assigned us into groups and we were to contact one another to work on this blog. Well, I was in a group of 5 or 6, but only three of us got together. We waited as long as possible for the others to show up, they never did, so between the three of us, we created this blog. We worked well together and I loved it and then saw a message from one of the others the day before the blog was due, with some excuse why she wasn't there and how she can help..I felt bad for her, because at the time, our work was done, there was nothing she could do and the instructor knew this. I am sure she didn't get any credit.
The second one was a nightmare, as I was the only one to start, no one else contacted me. Then finally a couple did after I did some work, but I didn't submit it yet. So since I had done most of the work already, I assigned to the others what I felt I didn't do well on, and I made them work on it, without sharing what I had already researched. They did a good job, but it stunk, that at first I thought I was doing it all by myself..It was stressful..
So, yeah, I love working in groups, only if the others also work with me..

That is a good point. I understand why you found the situation in the second group stressful. I would have done the same thing as you and just started on my own, but it is definately not a nice situation to be the only one who is active when you are supposed to work together as a group.
I have also studied online and the two of my classmates and I did most of the group projects together. The teamwork in our group went well and we didn't experience problems, but many of the other groups did. In some group very few people were active, because they were too busy with work and only studied part time.

Hi Porco, when i was still a student, i always done my work as a group. Because our teacher always gives us group assignments, where we will need a few persons to formed a group to complete the assignments. So, we will assigned, who done which job, to make sure it is done properly and according to the time frame. Indeed, it is always excited to see in the end, my group always able to achieved our assignments within the time frame. Although sometimes we are unable to complete our assignment according to the required rules but at least we felt the excitement to work as a team. porco, when i have the time, i will reply to your email again. Do keep in touch always, my friend...

In my school group assigments were also very common, and I have done a lot of different group projects. Learning to work in a team is considered a very important skill in my country and I think that is one of the reasons why group assignments are so popular in the Danish schools. I look forward to receiving your next email, just write when you have the time

Teamwork is important today, that is true. In the Danish schools the students learn teamwork right from the elementary school, and we have many group projects in every subject. Sometimes we are able to choose our own topics and sometimes the teachers decide the topics. The ability to work in a group is considered important, because most of the students will have to work in some kind of team when they finish their education.

I was into group work during my school days, and i find it challenging, exciting and fun. More ideas arises, more problems are solve and a good project is produced. But sometimes group work has a disadvantage. Especially if you are the leader and some of your team mates does not like to cooperate.

Yes, group work can be a challenge sometimes, for instanse if the members of the group find it hard to cooperate of if they have different ideas for the time and the energy that they want to invest in the project or the assignment. On the other hand group work can also be a big advantage when the group members are able to help and inspire eachother and use the different stregths that the members have.

group work can be either great fun or pain in the a** seriously. I had experience in both cases, when i was in uni i was put in a group with a chinese girl who literally did not know a single English word, her grammar is horrible and obviously we could not communicate. As a matter of fact I had to do the work on my own, which I wasn't quite bothered because I'd rather take the full responsibility for my grade than give her ruin my entire effort. On the other hand, i got to work with some amazing students also, who were responsible and amazingly smart, my Psychology assignment, which we only met for one meeting, got 80% or more :) At the end of the day, I do like group work, but it pretty much depends on the ppl you work with :)

Hi and welcome to Mylot! That is a good point. Group work can be challeging when you have to work in a group with people you can't communicate with like the Chinese girl that you mentioned. I have tried that situation when I spent some time at an international school. We were supposed to speak English all the time, but some of the students didn't speak much English and they used their local languages instead. The only problem was - the rest of us didn't understand those languages. I loved the international atmosphere, but communication was often difficult.

Yes, some group members do more work than others. That is one of the things that often lead to arguments because the people who work hard get frustrated when other members of the group don't do much as them. I think that one of advantages about group work is the fact that we are able to inspire and help eachother and sometimes we get new ideas when we listen to others, but the different attutide towards group work can be a group can be a problem. Sometimes some members of the group want to work hard and get good grades and other members want to relax.

Hi Porcospino
During the days when I was studying, we didnt have anything like the Group Activities. However, my group of friends (we always bunked college and classes) did some charity work in a group like we would organize a workshop at some suburb or slum areas educating them about healthiness, sanitation etc. This is my only experience of Group Activities. Though we never were evaluated but all of us (we were 10) did our roles assigned.
Later, professionally, I did work with a few teams and even as Team Lead on my Assignments of Software Development but then, it wasnt that fun as it was during the college days.

That charity work sounds like a great initiative I have been involved in charity work myself, but it was a different kind of work like work for the lung association and language help for foreigners. My school was different from yours, because group work was very popular, and we had lots of different group projects in almost any subject.

according to me group work must be needed in education. We can get more interesting ideas from our friends and we can share our own thoughts only when we are in groups. If we are alone, our imagination level will be low. If we work in team, the output of the particular project will be good

That is true. When we work in a group we are able to inspire eachother, share our thoughts with others and learn from eachother. When I was a nursing student we often worked in groups and I learned a lot from that. My two best friends and I often worked together, but it was also interesting to work with other classmates and hear their thoughts about the different topics. Of course it can also be difficult to work in group sometimes, for instanse if we aren't good at working together or if we talk too much about other things instead of doing the work that we are supposed to do, but I still think that there are many advantages about group work.

Happy new year to you, too Yes, group exercises tell a lot about groups and the way that they work together. In my education group exercises were a big part of the lessons, and I learned a lot from some of those exercises. We have one group exercise we all carried a sign, but we couldn't read it ourselves. We had to guess the words on the sign based on the way that the other people reacted towards us in the discussion. On my sign it said: "Listen to my ideas, but reject them" and that is what the other members did whenever I said something and I was able to guess the words by watching the way that they reacted towards me. It was like a game, but at the same time we learned a lot from it.

I also think that it is important to have the same aim when you work together in a group. In my school group work was very popular. The teachers gave us group assignments in almost every subject. In some groups it was very easy to work together because we all had the same goal and we worked together in a good way. In other groups the teamwork was much harder and we didn't agree about the methods etc.

Hi and welcome to Mylot! I think it is true that group work can be very effective. When the group members are able to cooperate and help and inspire eachother, group work can be very useful and effective. I was in a very good group when I went to nursing school, we really enjoyed working together and we made some great projects together.
