Friends. My sister would be undergoing radical mastectomy next week in order to control her tumor cells. The doctor has offered to do reconstructive surgery and put on silicone implants. I told her, "dont grab it because such is not covered in insurance and that she would need to take chemotherapy sessions hereafter. Friends, what are the pros of having silicone implants? Is it just plain vanity?

If the person having a mastectomy is subject to depression prior to the surgery, doctors will usually recommend reconstructive surgery, be it with silicone implants or the salt water implants. Most women suffer from depression of some form after the surgery, but if she has a good support system, normal depression can be handled. For many women who question there appearance even before cancer, to think of being "mutilated" due to required surgery, truly plays on their mental health. I see no reason to attribute reconstructive surgery as vanity when it is so much easier to avoid the aftermath of the loss of an integral part of a woman easily and effectively for not only her benefit but perhaps her mate. It will always be hard for anyone to accept looking anything but normal. It would be like asking a person who lost their nose, if they would accept easily living their life without a nose. I have a friend who had a plastic surgeon specialist tell her she had to have a mastectomy and I advised her to get a second opinion that a lumpectomy may be effective and save her the heartache and depression of a mastectomy. She went to a different specialist in a major city and found out I was correct and the mastectomy was totally unnecessary. Hope some of this insight helps you.

Good day Graceekwenx! Yes, I guess having silicone implants is just for vanity but it would help her cope up with her situation. Waking up with one chest isn't easy I guess and silicone implants could help boost her self confidence again.
