Are you afraid of snakes?

January 5, 2012 11:09am CST
My answer to that question is a big yes. Just want to share with you what I experienced when I came home tonight. I saw a snake in our window, it's just a small snake I think just few inches in length. I was shocked coz I closed the window and I didn't know that the snake was behind it! That was so terrifying for me it's a black snake. Good thing I didn't accidentaly touch it. That was not the first time I saw a snake in our house, the last time was a bigger one and it was crawling in the doorknob near our kitchen. When I opened the light and the door afterward I was shocked with what my hand felt and something fell on the floor. When I looked down, I realized that it was a snake! For this both scenario I didn't have the courage to kill the snake. I just hope the snake will never come back to our house. How about you myloters? Do you have similar experience like this? Do you fear snakes? I am so afraid and I don't want to see more snakes again. Is there anything I should do to keep them away from our house?

well i know of a similar situation,it was one day my mother called and she sounded frantic and at the same time i could tell she was walking fast or running while on the phone.she was saying, come quick!,come quick!.so when i started over to her house, which of course my mother lives right next door, bout 150 ft.door to door,so when i actually did see her she was almost to my door phone in hand looking as if she had seen a ghost.so i say ma! what is the problem, and all she could say was snake,so i went over there and a snake had fallin from the ceiling, into the kitchen, which i'm not afraid of snakes,so i called my husband over to help me get the snake and put it in a bag and take it out.now mind you as we are taking the snake out,we get to the porch and ma starts to yell again, snake!,they are coming to get me!,i said what now,and she pointed and low and behold there was another snake on the front porch window,i felt they had to be together or it was just an animal attack moment(lol),but any way we removed the snakes for ma and then we went and brought some lime and fixed the ceiling and spreaded some lime, they say it keeps the snakes away, haven't seen any more since we done that,so maybe you might want to give it a try,you find it at your local home depot or some place of that nature.

hello kuttapop! what your mom experienced was really so scary. good thing you are not afraid of snakes.. well I am very afraid and I'm so thankful that what I saw was just a little snake. that was really considered as snakes attact! I'm not familiar with lime, is that a chemical or something? it seems its effective to keep the snakes away. thank you for sharing your mom's terrible experience.

CALCIUM HYDROXIDE (HYDRATED LIME),it's a white powdery compound.we sprinkle it around the edges of the yard, under the house, and other place you might suspect a snake to try and go,mostly warm places,my aunt finds them sometime behind her dryer,in the garage.

Just like you, i am very much afraid of snakes too. But i don't have any experience yet of seeing them in our house, but i saw one passing by in the walkway, where i am to pass. I run after it passed by. My fear of snake is so great that even watching them on a TV documentary that my husband watches , i cannot do. I fear that if i watched them, i would dream of them biting me. Maybe your house is surrounded with grasses, trees and thick foliage plants. That's where they like to lurk. So, maybe you can have all of them trimmed and do some burning of dried leaves. The fire drives them away.

The snakes are coming from the vacant lot. It's in the mango tree branches that they are able to crawl over into you house or yard. So maybe you can hire a gardener to cut those extending branches on your roof. See to it that they don't extend into your yard or roof anymore. In addition, maybe you can burn those dried leaves in the vacant lot , but be sure to wear boots and be apprehensive, because those snakes might scamper and go near you instead.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is afraid or let me say soooo afraid of snakes. I can watch it on TV but not seeing them live in front of me. Actually I suspect that the snakes are coming from our backyard, it's a vacant lot with many tall grasses and beside our house is a large mango tree which branches extend to our roof top. I didn't know that snakes have fear of fire. I'll try to do that. Thank you so much simplyd.

Well if I were in your place I'd just scream loud and run away. I can't do as others who have the courage to kill snake that come their way. Of all things, it is snake that I really dread. I can't even stand its sight. I hate looking at this creature. It does not look just dreadful but there is something in it that makes me feel like throwing up.

hi salonga actually that was the only thing that I did that time. To my surprise I screamed out loud. thank you for your comments.

i have a fear of snakes!!! i can't even look at a snake even if its on television i cant help it but get goosebumps. i have several experience of having a snake enter our house though they were small ones but they still gave me the creeps. one time i remember a big snake almost 3 meters long entered our premises and was aiming at my dog who was barking its throat out to alarm us that a big snake was coming at her ready to bite and make her its breakfast. when i looked out the window to investigate i saw the snakes head aiming straight at my dog. i had to gather all my courage and get help from my brother in law who was at that time still in bed sleeping in the adjacent house. he found the snake in our small drainage canal. some of our neighbors came also to help capture or kill the snake. after several hours of chasing, my brother in law and our neighbors were able to kill the big snake using a long sword like knife just like a Samorai sword that is very sharp at the tip. my nieces and nephews took several photos of the incident and posted it on facebook!

similar stories like this really scares me. why do snakes go in places with people? why they don't just stay at the forest? good thing the big snake was killed that was really terrifying. I don't want to see like that.. thanks mammots for sharing your stories about snakes.

I am very much afraid of snakes, even worms that are very little. I'm ashamed of that, hahaha but I really do, even those very tiny earthworm, worm, whatever it is that looks like snake, long and ewww! Even scanning in books and it happened I saw a big picture of snake, I get my hands off from the book, hahaha... It's a funny thing but it's true. I really don't like snake.
6 Jan 12
lol this is so funny! thanks for your comments gaea. I'm not that so afraid of snake when it is in a book. as for the worms for me it's a dirty creature and I still don't want to to see or touch it.

I haven't had any real life experience with snakes but I am afraid of snakes just by watching them on TV, i don't think i can't stand it if they appear in my house, crawling on the floor and stuff.. Moreover, in Vietnam countryside, people often talk about snake myths, which go like this: if there is a pair of snakes suddenly appear in your home, it's good luck, they come and they will leave, if you are trying to kill one of them, the other will come back and hunt you down no matter where you are :( and people in the family will mysteriously die one by one..

I guess that is true if someone is accidentally bite by the snakes. Actually just last month another snake in our house found and killed in one of our room! Every now and then we are seeing snakes skins in some of the corners of our house! I'm really scared. I know they are here lurking.. I hope they don't come back and hunt us. Wish they could be my friend so they won't hunt us lol. thanks!

Nope! Not afraid at all, just very respectful of their right to be left alone to get on with their life. I have handled non-poisionous snakes and it is a wonderful sensation to hold such a vibrant animal. I lived in Africa for 14 years and in all that time I only saw two snakes in the bush and they were making off as fast as their little scales could carry them. They were afraid of my heavy footfall and knew I wasn't prey and even could do them harm.
5 Jan 12
wow I wish I could do the same. yeah snakes have the right to live also. thanks for your comments smacksman.

My uncle used to own a 20 foot python snake for a pet. It was very big. I was able to touch its body. But I have to admit that I nwould not dare touch it near its head. So I guess I am still afraid of them. I dont mind touching then but not anywhere near its head. Have a nice Day!
6 Jan 12
at least you are brave enough to touch it except near its head. For me seeing the snake or just the color of it scares me enough. thank you for your comments.

Ireland's known for not having any native snakes,so I've never encountered one in the wild..And I've never known anyone who kept them,so have never had the chance to meet one.I have no problem with lizards or frogs, but I'd definitely be wary of a strange snake if I met one in case it would be one of the poisonous variety..As you found, they can get in very small spaces..Sounds like you need someone more well informed on them to make your home snakeproof!
5 Jan 12
I wish I am in Ireland too.. I have to look every corner of our house now coz I don't want to be shocked again by a snake. I like our home to be snakeproof! I'll research more on this. thank you for your comments.

One of my former classmates has several snakes in his home, he keeps them as pets. One day our teacher asked him to tell us something about snakes and in order to illustrate the things he described he used one of his own snakes. Afterwards he asked us if we wanted to hold the snake or just touch it. No thanks! I will watch it from a distance, that it okay, but I definately don't want to hold it in my arms. I just couldn't do that, I would be too scared. I used to have nightmares about snakes, and I still remember how scared I was in those dreams, I couldn't move and the snakes were getting closer and closer
5 Jan 12
I really do not want to hold a snake! I also had some bad dreams about snakes but good thing last night I didn't have any. thanks for sharing porospino!

Oh my gosh! That must have been so scary. I hate snakes more than anything. Even when i see them on tv, they scare the living daylight out of me. Is it possible to hate something with passion cos thats how i feel. In fact, i hate everything that crawls. I think if you cut onions around the house, the smell might scare them away. You can try it
5 Jan 12
yes it was a very scary experience that I don't want to happen again. I didn't know that onons could do something to scare them away. I will try that thanks luckygal!

I am very much afraid of the snakes. Once my wife has seen a cobra in front of our gate. As we are staying in the city outskirts, there are a lot of snakes in out area. Sometime back, one of my neighbour has seen a big cobra in his bed room. Then onwards, I never kept open the windows and doors.
5 Jan 12
cobra! I couldn't imagine myself seeing like that. I only saw small snakes, how much more if.. I'm so afraid. I understand why you don't keep your windows and doors open. thank you for sharing!

I have never met anybody who said that they aren't afraid of snakes. The mere thought of having a snake in your window actually gives me the shivers. I live in an area where there are still a lot of wooded area and I know that when the rainy season comes, some snakes do come out of their hiding places. But I have a very effective snake repellant. My cats. I have once seen my cat Spot pounce on a baby snake and even though that our neighbors were all alarmed, she was able to kill it and she seemed to have like an air of pride around her after she had killed it.

Never encountered any snakes, but I am not really in a hurry to change that any time soon. There is just a lot about snakes that just rather make me uneasy on a certain level. Interesting creatures to read about, don't really get me wrong, but there is a fine line between creatures that I want to read about and also creatures that I want see in real life. I would not really know how to keep them away from your home. Then again, considering that there was really no reason for me to keep snakes away from my home in the past, it is a rather moot point to say the very least. I fear snakes in about any other way that I may fear something that I have never encountered. The unknown can be a very powerful fear.
