I was told by a friend that a child say i want sounds like you are teaching your child to be selfish.. do you think this is so? is there any thing else like this? Is there more into words then we think? so we not realize the little things some times?

I am of the opinion that there is nothing good and nothing bad actually. Our situation and surroundings and timing make them so. While I would like to be exactly like 3honor, here I am going to say something slightly different. To say want is not bad. To be selfish is also not bad. If you are surrounded by selfish people who keep saying they are selfless, it would be foolish not be selfish. But to be selfish when everybody around is selfless is rotten. So I'd let my child know both..

Its experience. :) Actually, selfish people try to emphasise others mistakes at times without realizing it at times with selfish motives. They say this is wrong, and that is wrong. I think there is nothing wrong in saying want. Saves time actually though 3honor's way is certainly more polished. My observation is people who use words like want are also more successful in life - monetarily. Now have your pick. :)

thank you. I think trying to be well rounded and understanding with an open mind is a good way to go. I think i'm doing ok with my girls not the best things need work but i am trying and i think they are good girls. they light my life up. I smile every day because of them. I try to show them to be respectful and thought full but also to stand up for them self's and what they believe in a good way.

To answer your first question "i want" in a general way like i want a drink or i want a new toy, in any way could it sound selfish? for your second question it's a general so lets say the child takes care of the toy fairly as a normality for a 6 or 7 year old. I personally now thinking on it do not think it is selfish that the child is using "i want" to state they want or need some thing and i can not understand how someone could find that selfish the child is only using what he or she knows to get some thing i mean "can i" or "may i have" dose sound better but is harder for some kids to pronounce. like my 4 year old has some speech problem so she has trouble with some words.

my children also say few things which are bad, but those aren't taught by parents, they learn from media, school strangers talking, etc....these r normal during the growing years. just ignore and keep teaching the kids the good things about life.
