Who Were the Sons of God in Genesis?

In Genesis chapter 6 we find some really, really bad stuff. Verse 4 in particular seems to be the reason why God grieved he ever created us. "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown." Soon after this the flood came, and life as they knew changed forever. Can you imagine being the only family on planet Earth? So who were the Sons of God? Got an opinion?

Since they produced the Nephilim, they could not be human sons of God. They must be some of the same sons of God who were present when God made the earth. Job 38:4-7 King James Version (KJV) 4Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Jude 6 King James Version (KJV) 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Line by line, word for word, I am in agreement with you. I especially love the verse in Jude. It kind of explained it all for me. Thanks Superman, I mean Hopefulman.

Thank you very much for the BR award! Here are a couple of other verses that might help to complete the picture. 1 Peter 3:19-20 King James Version (KJV) 19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 2 Peter 2:4 Today's New International Version (TNIV) 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,(a) putting them in chains of darkness(b) to be held for judgment; Footnotes: (a) 2 Peter 2:4 Greek Tartarus (b) 2 Peter 2:4 Some manuscripts in gloomy dungeons

There's some very interesting scripture about those "aliens." Sounds like a bunch of demons playing up there with the Prince of the air.

According to the Book of Job, the sons of God were angels.. in these two cases, the fallen ones. (We can be happy 2/3 of the angels remained faithful and work for good.)

Yes, Flowerchilde. Thank God for the 2/3 of angels who remained faithful. And Alice, where does it say an angel is God's daughter? Or what do you mean?

Some of the angels chose to follow Satan and do things that they were not created to do. It is explained on other places in the Bible. It is sad that these angels left the Almighty Father and became evil. In Revelation 12 we can read that they are now near the earth: "7 Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. 8 And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. 9 This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels....12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you in great anger, knowing that he has little time.”"(New Living Translation) These wicked angels will not be around for long, so we can look forward to a cleaning of the earth!

Well, God allows them for a short time so that we can show which side we are on and what is in our heart. But we can read in chapter Rev 20 that they will be imprisoned for a thousand years: "1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit[a] and a heavy chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon—that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan—and bound him in chains for a thousand years. 3 The angel threw him into the bottomless pit, which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished. Afterward he must be released for a little while." When they are released, they will have a last chance to test the human children of God, but then they will be destroyed forever. After that God will no longer need to allow the evil to exist. We can look forward to an eternity with only good people on earth and good spiritual creatures in heaven. You can read about it in chapter 21.. The best is ahead of us...

sons of god were created by god, whereas the nephlim was a hybrid of two races, human and angels or aliens or whatever The more recent view which has been the majority position in the church since St. Augustine in the fourth century is that the Sons of God refers to the god-fearing line of Seth; and thedaughters of men refers to the daughters of the unbelieving line of Cain. Variations on this theme include the idea, proposed by Meredith Kline, that the Sons of God were kings or priests who took any woman they chose to be their wife. Still others hold that the Sons of God were other created men. It is argued that the Bible does not describe every person that was created, but only key individuals or situations are included within the text. Those holding to this position call into question the origin of Cain's wife or those whom he feared would kill him Genesis 4:14-17 . However, this view falls into conflict with Genesis, which states that Eve is the mother of all the living.

Yeah, I don't like the latest explanation because the line of Seth and Cain cannot create giants. And there is proof there were giants. You're such a scholar, Winterose. Impressive!

I know, macanan. But have you studied the Bible? Have you meditated on it day and night as it says we should do? I didn't say I didn't have an answer, I was just asking for others' opinions. So thanks for your response. Many blessings, my friend.
