Confusing/Frustrating Customers!!?!?

Currently I am bartender/server at a nicer restauraunt (not a corporate chain). I was serving this one table of 3. They seemed like nice people, very friendly and chatty. I was pleased to be serving them and was going to make sure they got good and proper service. They stayed for about 2 hours ordering wine, appetizers and finnaly their entrees. Again, I made sure everything was served at appropriate times and on time. Finally their night came to an end and I asked them how everything was. They told me the following, "Oh it was absolutely wonderful, great food, I am very pleased!". I had a big smile on face for I was sure I had just made a decent tip and probably a returning customer. Alas, I opened up the bill holder and found a whopping $4.30 on a tab that exceeded $100. I was somewhat enraged, somewhat upset, and extremely confused. What kind of person allows their server to beleive they are very pleased with everything only to leave them with a tip that doesnt even cover my required tip-out at the end of the night? Some customers I just will never understand.

Hi, You have done your job well and it gave you a complete satisfaction when they appreciated it vebally. So be thankful. Some people don't believe in offering tips, so what you say for that? They say it is the duty of server to behave politely and offer the best of his service. As you said, don't try to understand them at all... that will make you more ease and why expect high and get less? Most of the hotels/ Restaurants in our city do charge service tax as extra to the bill and these days the 'tip system' is an outdated practise. best wishes for a great year ahead!

that is how waitresses/waiters get paid. I am not a waitress myself but I respect their service and appreciate all they have to put up with. Most places only pay their servers $2.30 an hour so they make their money in tips. The job is physically and mentally challenging. Most menus have it at the bottom of the menu to pay 15% of the bill. If I get horrible service, I am still gonna give the waitress a tip but it may not be 15% but if I get excellent service and can tell the waitress/waiter went out of their way to make sure I was happy, they will get more than 15%. I think this server would have been happy to just get the 15%. Only major chains automatically charge the 15% of bill as the tip. She/He said that they did not work at a chain. Anywayz....

They may not be financially that sound. And what I have learned in a professional career is not to have expectations. Because once expectation are broken then we get hurt. But as a human we cant stop ourselves from having expectations. We have to do our duty and we must not expect the fruit.

...if they aren't financially sound then they should not be eating at expensive restauraunts, racking up $100 bills and then not tipping the service. Im sorry but for me to serve them COST ME MONEY, im not about to feel bad for these cheap morons.

I get that different countries and establishments have differing policies on tipping...Some rely on the tip to make up the wage,or the tip is necessary to cover employee deductions or taxes..in other places, minimum wage is livable, and tips are a bonus. Some places apply a fixed percentage on a party table, others, the tip is at the customer's discretion. sometimes,You'd get a good tip from a couple, other times a big family celebration would leave zilch...Were they locals or tourists? Some people just won't tip, others might "assume" it's built in to the bill at the end, even though there'd be nothing to say that's the case on the menu or check..Sometimes,the Bear Eats You...

I will at least leave double the tax as a tip but many times I give more. There are times when I cannot leave as much but since I know this ahead of time - I do not pester or bother the servers at all. It would not be right.

I have noticed the same thing. Many people appreciate the food and service but leave behind a paltry tip.Maybe they are tightfisted or they don't have proper appreciation of the amount to be given as a tip.I rather think its the first rather than the second reason.
