Windows XP is old and no longer supported by Microsoft. Vista was not one of MS's best offerings but Windows 7 is good, stable and secure. It should also be backwardly compatible with most older programs.
Games, like any other software, are continually advancing and taking advantage of new operating systems. They also require much more graphics capability than older games and, if the OS you are using has no support for the graphics, you are out of luck! Few graphics card manufacturers are going to produce drivers for an OS which is no longer supported by MS.
Many new games will not run properly (if at all) on an older OS which is no longer supported.

Its better to have dual boot with XP and 7. It is more effective and you can switch when you want to. Windows XP is now drifting away, and seven is emerging.
