I don't think it's the best thing to do to turn the notebook into a router, while you can it offers much less functionality and makes it a likely target for wifi hackers. I would much prefer to buy a separate wifi router, let it receive the wired internet signal, then spread it. The laptop would simply connect to it like any other device.
A hardware router has additional built in hardware firewall, gives you a chance to do NAT and is less exposed to attacks when properly configured.

There is no need for a phone to enter a wifi network, any wifi enabled device will suffice, like a laptop or a desktop with a wifi card. Also plan for the future, just because nowadays there are little wifi devices, tomorrow can appear. In any case, make sure your wifi network uses WPA encryption (not WEP) and a strong password.
Either if you go with the router or with the program for laptop, both the phone and any computer, laptop or desktop, on the network will have internet access and can download anything.
