valerian and melatonin. strong stuff. side effects?

Once I asked a question on mylot about safe sleeping medicine. My wife started taking valerian and melatonin. But sometimes she gets up in the night and does things she doesn't remember... microwaves a dinner, carries on a conversation, cleans up a room... then two hours later does the same thing. Doesn't remember it... ...is this typical of one or both of these over the counter sleep aids?
