Does anyone know any sites where you can post fiction for sale or pick up assignments. I write for a few article sites but would like to do some other writing as well

I don't know what site to give you that can help you much more than what the first poster gave. I just came across this discussion thinking that I too wish to earn just by doing what I do best: Writing fiction and doing other people's work...lol
But I can suggest you try posting either in Squidoo or LiveJournal. So far those two sites are the ones that came to mind when I read your knack fro writing fiction...I don't know about pick up assignments though...

I searched the site for a bit and came to find scribd.com. You might be interested in that site if you like the http://www.docstoc.com. Good luck in your quest to earn with your stories! I'm gonna have to search for mine still until I find something that really is appealing to me.

As far as pick up assignments go, sites like peopleperhour, guru and freelancer are the some of the first to come to my mind. I have had a good experience with freelancer and am quite happy to be there. I have got many writing assignments and it was quite friendly all around. I am also a member of peopleperhour and guru, though I have yet not been so active there. Actually, I did not bid a lot or accept projects nor did I show any interest in doing jobs there. I can already full with my other engagements. But guru is considered to be the top rated site in the world when it comes to searching for freelancing jobs.
I was a member of a site that gave specific keywords to write for. We, as members, needed to form a story out of the given keywords. I don't remember the name of the site, but was owned by someone in the United Kingdom. Actually, it studied how people of various age-groups developed (thought) stories and how they concluded. It was basically to study the behavior of people of different age groups. But as it was a non-profit site, it did not last long and finally the site closed down.
But I was very happy with the way the site functioned as I liked the format the most. Moreover, they were paying in pounds.
