The era of aquatic animals begging for food.

I stumble upon a news in Yahoo that caught my attention, the headline of the news was "Begging Whale Sharks stir debate in Philippines". The first question that pop out of my mind was "When did aquatic animals start begging for food?". I find it weird because aquatic animals feed themselves because it is in their nature and in some live shows (Ocean Park) they are given prizes for a job well done but "begging", is that how fishes get food these days? As I was reading the article, the issue was about whale sharks, which what I know in the family of sharks they are very aggressive and deadly and that they can really eat almost anything as long as it has meat on it. I mean I know whale sharks are very popular and according to the news, if you want to see a live one, you need to feed it with baby shrimps. It has said this has been an issue for quite sometime now, that feeding these aquatic animals will leave them dependent to humans instead of their own hunting instincts. It is not bad to give them food, but they should also know that they are also in a family of deadly predators and should not be abused (Well, for those who like sharks can keep this as a family pet). Well, the main point is that the reason why the head of the marine management, discouraged the mayor to execute this practice because it is not healthy to the animals. And the mayor's response was no accident has happened yet and these sharks can still find and food. But the main point for me is that "Will you wait for an accident to happen before you can stop this?". It is not bad to watch them, but safety is priority and animals are born to be wild :) (for reference, you can read the article in Yahoo Philippines and search for it.) So, do you think that such feeding program should stop or not?

Whale sharks or butanding, they;re the same right? I dont know for sure if whale sharks even devour human beings. As far as I know, they only eat planktons or very tiny fishes because that's what their mouths are only capable of. Maybe they can suck you in by accident but never intentionally trying to eat you. Not sure. I am not a marine bio but I do watch discovery channel (half asleep that is). LOl I don't think feeding them is a good idea but for tourism's sake, maybe a bit of exemption can be done? But what should be controlled is the number of tourists per day and the hours they are allowed to see them.

i agree with you that whale sharks should be left on their own. no interference on their way of living except if they need. however, as far as i know, feeding is not really allowed for wild animals especially in their own habitat. you are right that they should not depend on outsiders for their food. they are not pets. but i am not sure if it is called feeding program. i know there is no such thing.
