I am a Catholic (just about to leave for Church actually) but I know much about all of the major religions of the world. The Holy Texts of Judaism are: The Torah and Talmud. The "Old Testament" as we know it is all the Jews believe in equivalent to us. Our "New Testament" are the Gospels written by the FOLLOWERS of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John that tell of Jesus' life!

Tanakh is the word used by the Jews to describe the various books of the Old Testament in their totality. The various sub-groups are: The Torah, Genesis--Deuteronomy The Nevi'im, The historical and Prophetic books The Ketuvim, Proverbs, psalms, Job, Song of Solomon, Ruth, Esther, etc.

Jews don't have a New Testament, as they don't think Jesuchrist is the Messiah. Therefore, they don't have an Old Testament: they just have the Bible, which is not a hebrew word, but a greek one. I don't know what would be its equivalent in Hebrew.

i think it is equivalent to Torah (the Law: Genesis-Deutronomy), Nevi'im (The Prophets: Joshua, Jeremiah, Isaiah & so forth) & Kethuvim (The writings: Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes etc.), because although Jews believe to the coming of Mesaiah, they didn't accept Jesus Christ as One, so they don't believe in Gospels of Matthew to John, let say the "New Testament" in general.

thanks freethinkingagent (long name huh, lol) & there's more to that. The phrase Old Testament is not applicable to all hebrew scriptures, cuz it refers only to the covenant of God to Abraham & later to David.

As several have already said, The old testament is all that is in the Jewish religion. It is called the Torah.

Yes VKX is correct...Torah is not how you say Old Testament in Hebrew, but since the Torah (Jewish Holy Law) is the same as the Old Testament of the bible....well you get the picture...lol

The Old testament is the Torah, but if You refer only to the 5 Books of Moses, then it's the Tanakh.
