A friend asked me what musicial instrument that my son studies. Then I told her my son studies to play the piano. She was so surprised to hear that and probably she found it amazed since she thought the piano is for the girls. Then I told her that that most famous pianist are actually men

Music does not care about gender, and men are wonderful pianists. I think it is good that your son is studying the piano.

Beethoven, Bach, Chopin All wrote pieces for the piano! Back in their time there may have been instruments that were played More by women but that is it!

Well of course not, all the great piano masters were all men - Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, etc, etc!!! And, currently, my favorite pianist is also male ~ Yiruma. Look him up at YouTube and you'll find his pieces really, really amazing!

I think whoever plays piano are cool regardless of their gender. I wish i had learned piano when I was a kid :( or any instruments! That is one of my regrets, not learning to play any instruments.

I think it is probably so that most students of the piano are girls. But many boys study the piano too. I myself studied the piano as a boy, and yet although I had some talent for the instrument, I was terribly lazy, and refused to apply myself, which made my music teacher very sad; because I was not good at many things at school. However, I had a real passion for guitar; and yet even with regard to the guitar, I was quite lazy. In the event, I learned what I needed; some simple chords mainly, and became more or less self-taught as a guitar player. I never became a brilliant guitar player; but I developed some kind of style that enabled me to write pretty good songs.

As for the piano, I never really played again; although in the 70s and 80s I used to like to bang out some simple Rock and Roll tunes. But to your son I say...well done! I wish him luck. I hope he works hard (unlike me); and becomes a fine player; great piano playing is a true wonder. I hope he eventually plays some Debussy; some Ravel; some Satie; some Duparc; some Poulenc...I love piano music.

I'm a guy and I play the piano. I have been playing for about 9 years now and I enjoy it. and you bring up an interesting point that the most famous pianists are men, now that I'm thinking about it, I can't really name many big female pianists.

I'm surprised that your friend was surprised that your son studies piano as well. Looks like your friend isn't using a wide enough scope on the world - like you said, there are many famous male pianists in the world. In fact, most of the piano performances I've been to have men in them.
These stereotypes slightly annoy me.

Really now? I thought anyone can play piano not just simple girls. I know that being able to play an instrument such as piano is a very favorable talent in an Asian family. My dad wanted me to get into piano or a guitar but I just have no passion in instruments. My cousins, two boys and one girl all know how to play piano. They have started since they were very young and now they're really good now.
Some of my friends from school play piano and it's mostly girls playing the piano. I always see the boys from next door of my school playing guitar or the drums. So generally, I guess girls prefer piano. But really, anyone can play piano, I did play for a bit but lost the passion.
To answer your question, I have nothing against boys playing piano. I reckon it's a pretty cool talent to be able to play any instrument.
I wouldn't mind dating a guy who could play piano, that could be pretty romantic and impressive.

Anybody can play the piano if one can practice to learn. There is nothing surprise to have a profession in this field by both women and men.

I am a music teacher and piano player as well. Your son should learn to play the piano and if he likes it then he should continue.Men are best players to women due to the size and length of fingers, which are normally longer in men and this helps better in playing cords and large note distances. Also men have more strength in their hands than women and that helps to play loud in concerts where a piano should be heard among 100 players.
So do not believe everything you heard and your response that the most famous pianists were men this is absolutely truth and acurate.
