Can a gasoline station explode because of cellphone usage?

Today I took a Jeep for a ride as I was going home. The Jeep stopped for gas at the station. I saw some rules for safety like turning off or not using a cellphone while gas is being loaded, turning off the engine and others. Sadly from my experience people do not mind this or make this a big deal. Anyway I haven't heard a report of a gasoline station exploding because of a cellphone. Whenever I see somebody using a cellphone on a gas station I really want to scold them. Why cant they just follow the rules to be sure of their safety? Are they waiting to experience explosion for them to learn to follow simple protocols? I am just bothered. That all. SO what do you think?

Yes it is true, and per-cations like these must not be ignored! there is an incident of burn and explosion due to chemical and electrical reaction reported basing from information sites, Read your mobile handbook about the warnings and per-cautions of cellphone usage at gasoline stations, electronic and chemical factories!

yes and it could be possible even though electrical and chemical factories as well as gasoline stations are protective with explosive containment devices it is still better for us to be cautious because in a place like gasoline stations gas fumes are present and when reacted to any high powered battery device can result to explosion!

While not being an expert on the subject I can tell you it's in the highly improbable category if even possible.
You're engine works by compressing air which becomes hot, then injecting a small mist of fuel into the cylinder, and finally adding a spark via spark plug, causing the compressed mixture of fuel and air to explode.
Now the conditions for gas to explode aren't quite that strict. It simply requires gasoline vapor or fumes (the part of any liquid that actually burns), oxygen (present in air), and a catalyst (usually electrical spark or fire) that introduces adequate energy into the equation.
Since while pumping gas fumes are emitted into the air and cell phones transmit electric currents, in theory what you asked is possible.
In practicality it's not. Mainly because cell phones use very small voltage circuits, I believe around 3V if not less, and shouldn't have any gaps for them to create a spark across. Compare to you're spark plug that's creating a spark at 10's of thousands of volts under ideal conditions.
I do believe there have been occasional cases from smoking or even static discharge from a person, but even these are considerably rare. Gas pumps as of recent have been made pretty safe. While it's best not to create sparks or fire near an active pump the odds of creating an explosion due to any negligence are pretty slim. If they weren't, there would be a lot of blown up gas stations. An remember almost nothing blows up in the manner seen on television, most things in fact, don't blow up at all.

Hi! I am so impressed with this. Thank you for the added language. Indeed, I have never heard of an explosion that happened because of cell phone usage in a gasoline station. However I believe it is still important to follow simple rules when in a gasoline station, just to be sure. Anyway what is few seconds or minutes of not using your cellphone while loading gas. :))

Glad I could help.
I don't really care about people using them at the pump. Its at the register and on the road that bugs me. But everyone has one, so its expected people will be on them everywhere.

I am with you. It's better to follow the rules, just to be on the safe side. The explosion may occur if the gasoline tank leaks. When someone is making a call or recieving a call, the signal sends out something that will catch fire easily. the fact that some people still make a phone call at the gas station means that they don't think explosion will occur because such incident has never been reported.

No, it's not true!
Did you watch the television show called Mythbusters? They tested this one out thoroughly & there's no way they could get hundreds of mobile phones ringing simultaneously to light anything up, produce a spark, register on a meter or anything anywhere near that.
The only reason to keep this rule is so other people don't hate you for "disobeying the rule". Some rules are just so ridiculous. There are a number of MyLot discussions on all the most hilariously ridiculously stupid rules in every country in the world. Makes great reading - you'll be in stitches after reading it!

next time you see anyone doing that just step out of you car and give a damn before you get one.......

Whats up with gasoline and cellphones?
There are some phones which emit a lot of radiation and that must have something to do with the gasoline and a reaction might occur, which can burn the whole station down.
Yeah, people should really follow these rules for the safety of everyone.

Hi! Actually I don't really have the thorough knowledge about the relationship of gasoline and cellphones although in every gasoline station we look there's a sign to turn off our cellphones while loading the gas since its highly flammable. Its best to be safe than regret it. Anyway there's no harm following rules and standard protocols. :))

I am not really sure. I admit to not turning my phone off while in a gas station. I just don't use it though. So far nothing catastrophic has happened.

Hmm, that is something new to me though. Talking on a cell phone might cause explosion? If there is some sort of transmit electronics in the premise, it won't cause fire either, so I don't know what is the protocol about. Probably there is a transmitting devices in the station, they don't want any cell phone signal to interfere of it.

Yes true me too i have not heard that gasoline will explode because of cellphone.
Cellphone don't have any posporous on it .And maybe just need for them to have safety.
I dont know if there is magnet on phone and to have big trouble on it........

There is all possibility to explod if you use a cellphone while filling the gas. Because when the phone rings there will be a minute spark and this spark is sufficent to catch the flame and thus for an explosion. So that in all gas stations all over the world there will be a sign banning the Cellphones. It is better to obey the rules. We can avoid a lot of accidents . As you said ,I have seen many peope using the Cellphones in the gas stations.

Hi! I agree with you it is really better to be safe than sorry. Anyway No harm will be done for not using your cellphone for a couple of seconds or minutes while loading gas. Some people are just stubborn and most people only learn when the damage has been done.:))

There was a point in time where gas stations did have restrcitions on using your cell phone at the pump. But as cell phone technologies became better, safer and give off very little radiation. This completely eliminated any risk of using a cell phone while pumping gas.

I have seen the signs also. Didn't think too much of them because I don't want to use my cell phone when I'm pumping gas anyway. I didn't look close enough, but do the signs provide a reason why you shouldn't use cell phones while pumping gas? Maybe one reason is because the cell phone is a distraction. If you are talking on it and not paying attention to how much gas is going into your vehicle, you could end up with more gas than what you wanted, therefore more money out of your pocket. I think businesses post so many silly rules because they don't want to get sued. There are a lot of people who sue for the smallest reasons because they see it as an easy way to get money.
