Can Too Much Red In A Room Be Overpowering?

I suppose it depends on the shade. With me being an Aries I love the colour red, especially the bright red. Think of Paddington Bear's wellies and you're getting there.
However, I'm not keen on dark red BUT I love all the shades of purple. Strange eh?
The thing is, would a load of bright red accessories (for example) be a bit much in a room that has other colours in it. I'm trying to introduce silver in small doses..and glass BUT I'd love to replace my lamp (that I keep having to bring from upstairs as I don't have two) with one that has a bright red shade.
Whaddya think? I've already chickened out of buying a clock with a red surround (gone with the silver) but surely a lamp would be inoffensive.
Oh, and it's got to cost around £15 so that narrows it down a bit.
Haha!

Bright reds are kind of harsh. Maybe a more subtle red shade would be better. But it all depends on what color the room is already. Like if the room has some brownish red overtones, then some subtle reds would work just fine. But to put bright reds in a subtle room would make it look off. The best way to test what works for you is to get some swatches of different colors and match them to the walls. If they feel comfortable together, then those should be the colors to go with.

Walls are bottom of my list, unfortunately, as we have high ceilings, therefore any work (whether it be painting or wallpapering) would cost and arm and a leg..and maybe another arm and another leg lol.
At the moment I'm thinking of doing stuff the other way round. Accessorise first, then decorate. Weird I know but it's all in my head what I want to do..it's just we need to rob a bank to finance it all.

the color red can make you feel very active and restless. if the room you are painting red is your bedroom then your room would not be conducive to sleep at all. the color red is recommended for rooms in the house that require a lot of activity like the play room or the music room or the living room or some highlights of red in the kitchen.

I know what you mean. I wouldn't want a red bedroom either, to be honest. The reason I would like a red carpet in the living-room is to make it brighter. I do have lighter blinds now that have helped but the carpet is old (inherited) and looking a bit grey. I reckon the original colour was more like a green but, over time, the colour has gone out of it. Red would certainly lift the space (and I've seen the carpet I want and it's wonderfully bright) but I wouldn't have the walls done in red, it would be like being in a Post Box!

if your carpet is the living room is red then it would be nice to paint your walls a very light yellow or a very light cream and paint your ceiling white and mahogany for the moldings on your ceiling. a nice red brick wall would be a nice accent to a living room!

I think a whole room painted red is a lot too much to handle. If the room is cream and it has a red lampshade it would be much better. I have a silver colored clock in my kitchen. I would say it would be fine for you to go ahead with getting the red lampshade. I spoke to a professional decorator and he was keen on neural paint colors and using colored accessories. When I moved to my bungalow all the walls were cream. Now the kitchen is light green and the hall is light pink. I wouldn't ever paint a whole room red. Any color can look good in small doses.

Not even a fiery Aries like me would have a whole room done in red lol.
I agree that "any colour" would look good if used in small doses. In actual fact, 60 Minute Makeover once said that a clashing colour can be used so long as it's not too over-the-top. I would have to be very brave to do that though.

That is too much!!
My room is not going to have red things or painted res. It is not suitable and I will not feel comfortable either if the entire room painted with red color. Some said the red color will tend to create more of an appetite. If you are those who wants to lose your weight don't dare to paint your room with that color~hehe(^^)

You may remember I have mentioned to you that milky white is the predominant colour in my room.I choose it just because I like such kind of colour. In fact,I specially like the red autumnal leaves, but I wouldn't like to have the red color in my room.I am not sure if it has to do with my introverted disposition.I beg to differ,You like red,I think It is not that you belong to aries i.e. ram but that the colour is the man.

Well, Aries' ruling planet is Mars and it is the red planet and I always feel a bit uncomfortable whenever robots survey the planet. I want it left alone. Strange, but true!
I do have silver blinds and the glass on the fronts of my media units have frosted lines on them..and the telly has a Midnight Rose surround. Unfortunately, the walls have an awful beigy colour at the top and a terracotta (a colour I hate) colour underneath the dado rail. What I may have to do in future is to buy nice pictures rather than have the walls re-decorated as the latter would cost a fortune.

As a baby we are used to red all around you.. it's the colour of the whomb and it comforts us.
Red, purple are colours close to black. And these colours (esp. dark purple and black) give the mind/brains rest. so the best colours to have in your house or even better.. your bedroom.
It depends on the kind of red colour you use and the person how much comfort/rest it will give you. But if you like it go for it. Silver and glass would drive my mind crazy.

Not too much glass you understand. It gives the appearance of the room looking bigger as any light would bounce off it. I would love a glass coffee table, for example but storage is non-existent with those so choice is severely limited. I would also love a large mirror with a minimalist frame as that would make the room look bigger too. We do have a problem with light in here you see. Hence me wanting to sort the lighting out.

it could be a bit much, I have always prefered to have nuetral walls except maybe for one feature wall, my favourite colour is purple and I have so many purple things around my house I prefer to have them stand out but I wouldn't mind having just one feature wall...

I've worn a red top with a dark purple cardigan a few times and it looked really good. I can well understand your love of purple as I find it is very soothing. Mum had part-lilac walls in a large room once and it looked fab. Painted over it now though.
A red carpet is a must in our living-room as it will lift this drab room to new heights. I've seen the one I want and I dream about it, it's that good.
Oh well..when we win the Lottery!

depends.the right accents can make it work.
i'm more of a fan of the blood red,but that's only because bright colors give me migraines.but grey is always a good mix with reds,so silver should work.

I find that too much red can be overpowering and I can get a headache.. However, like you my wife is an Aries (with Aries rising) and she loves the colour and looks quite good wearing it too. She doesn't particularly like a lot of it in decoration, and most of our rooms are sort of off-white colour. Being a Libra, my favourite is blue. My home office is blue and I tend to wear it a lot also. As a kid, I always picked the light blue jeans and would always go for the blue shirt or or whatever else I was wearing.. _Derek

For years I thought I was Leo Rising but that's Aries as well, along with an Aries Moon, so I have the full set lol.
Ironically, I too like the colour blue. Light blue is gorgeous and I absolutely LOVE blue sky without a trace of cloud in it. Seeing new green shoots appearing in spring is lovely too and I can't wait for my daffodils to come up as bright yellow is another colour that cheers me up.
So, I now have light blue, yellow and light green added to my collection of colours I like so I'm now more confused than ever for a lamp choice..oh, and not forgetting the purple shades!

hi janey when we still had a house I painted my bedroom walls in a soft red flat paint but one wall emerald and everyone thought i was nuts until they saw the end results. it was just beautiful as the red was not garish and the deep green seemed to soften the red even more.I would think a red lamp would be great just a little red to
spice up things. I am sure there are inexpensive lamps out there, sounds good to me.good luck and God blewss

Hiya Hatley, how are you? Feeling better I hope.
The room you describe sounds wonderful - honestly. I'm definitely going into Town tomorrow as John is after a new pair of trainers (his present ones are letting water in) so I'll let you know if I do indeed buy a lamp with a red shade. Wouldn't it be awesome if I found one?

I love red and i am a Scorpio but i love it to the point that i want my living room set to be red. I told my hubby that the moment we have our own house, i will have the sala set in RED and he does not mind it. And i want the tables in black...

Scorpio shares my ruling planet, Mars, which of course is the red planet..so that may explain your love of red.
Black and red..nice combination. Go for it, I say!

As I respond to this discussion, I'm at the desktop in our kitchen with a couple of walls painted dark red. This is also adjacent to the stairs going down the garage which is also painted with dark red. The computer table in which this monitor is on is also red.
Now my eyes have been desensitized already from seeing this kitchen everyday, so I don't really notice it anymore. I don't think it's overpowering.

For me, red is okay but not in my bedroom. I want the bedroom colors to be on peace *LOL. I had our bedroom painted in sky blue... looks heaven hahaha...
On other rooms, no dig deal to me as long as it'll look complimenting then why not red huh Janey! It depends really. And we can be quite experimental just in case.

Sky blue..now that's another colour I really like. I mean, no-one looks at a blue sky and gets depressed do they? I like it against the green of leaves on trees, especially in the springtime.

It's hard to find red clothing. Even a red lover like me only possesses one item of clothing (a bright red top) in that colour. I did see a lot of purple in the shops over Christmas as I suppose that's another festive colour isn't it? Anything's better than beige though lol.
The more I think about it the more I want a red lamp as the bulbs keep blowing on the one I move from the bedroom to the living-room and back again every day. Can't be doing it any good.
Any excuse.
