I've heard/read that dogs will do this to make themselves throw up if they have tummy issues, and also some just like the taste; dogs are omnivores. I would check her behavior--is she acting ok--and also check her feces. If you don't notice/see anything weird going on, i'ts probably ok. At my vet, you can call and ask a general question and the vet tech will give an answer over the phone or if they are unsure and it sounds iffy they say "better bring 'em, we'll check."

This is my first response on MyLot and I admit I didn't read the other responses very carefully, so I kinda repeated...someone mentioned your pup might not be getting all it's nutritional needs met--I feed my dogs super-healthy food that includes greens and also give a vitamin mineral supplement and one of them still eats grass, lol, and doesn't seem to do it to clear his tummy, just seems to like the taste, lol. However, I agree if her eating habits are poor, yeah, you should probably have her checked. (My grass eater had a check-up in Sept and was fit as a fiddle!)

There are only a couple of times when I saw my dog eating grass. Those are times that she was so sick. My neighbor told me that they are smelling and eating grass to remove any poison from their body. I'm not sure about this but eventually, after a day of eating grass, my dog became well. My neighbor's dog are also doing the same thing if they are sick.

Dogs are lactose intolerant and should NEVER be fed milk, butter, cheese or raw eggs.
Eating grass is common with dogs, but generally they do it because they need to purge from their system, something that isn't good for them. In your dog's case, it's probably the milk............

Well, I have seen my dog do such things.. the eating grass thing. In fact, I have seen plenty of dogs eating grass from time to time. After which, the dog will vomit. From what I understand, the dog most likely use the grass to treat some stomach disorder. Perhaps it is inherent in them to know that such kind of grass have certain qualities that may heal. Its just like humans, we do have some knowledge of plants that contain herbal and medicinal values.

Hi, my late dog also does that. One day he will not and then he will sneak outside to find a grass, he will eat it and after a few hours he will vomit the grass and then he feels better. Even my cats eat grass, I think they it grass when they feel something bad on their tummy, this serves as their cleaning process that's why they vomit it. That is only based on my observation, still the vet knows the best.

It is really strange. I think maybe she just want to try something new.

It's not bad that your dog is doing that. My dog does that as well and it has something to do with them knowing that there is something wrong with their stomachs. The grass is like their pepto-bismol I guess. So let her eat all the grass she wants. She'll know how much she has to eat and when she should stop. Happy mylotting!

This behaviour may be caused for intestinal parasites, the fact that he is not eating, may reflects that he is not feeling well. Dogs, and other mammals, sometimes eat hairy grass, because, when defecated or vomited, carries the parasites away with it. Remember that a dog should be dewormed at least twice a year, depending on the age, size, etc. Ask a vet anyway, to be sure.

This is perfectly natural. Dogs, like cats, eat grass when their tummies hurt. It is a way for them to get rid of whatever is making them feel unwell. My dog does this on occation. I am a little concerened with your pet, you mention that she doesn't eat some days, this isn't healthy. Your dog should be eating every day and if she isn't, it's time to take her to the vet. I recommend talking to your vet about changing your dog's diet, if she doesn't like the food, it could be time for a change, I hope that everything works out. Good luck.

some animals know how to treat themselves and for dogs it is one of the ways of treating themselves, as i have noticed, when our dogs eats grass, they don't have the appetite to eat afterwards but if your dog is skipping several meals, you should have him checked.

I've seen my dog do this before. But she did not throw up. Dogs tend to resort to eating grass for the water in them. That was a very hot day and my dog was dehydrated. You might have to take your dog to the vet to see if there's anything really wrong with him.

Yes, it is very true that dogs eat grass when they have stomach problem. Even our dog eats grass and throws up and then after few hours she will be fine and will take some food. That is the normal behaviour of a dog and that is the natural medicine for them to set right their stomach problem.

Hi stardustcdsd. Although I don't have a dog, I have seen a lot of shows and read a lot of articles.
One of these shows showed a similar behavior, the dog would chew on the bark of the tree. It is a way of treating itself.
As you said that your dog throws up after eating grass, I think it is trying to cleanse it's system. It makes me think it might be normal behavior (Normal being a relative term).
If it is doing too much, then you might consider taking him/her to a vet.

It is a genuine problem for all dogs, cat etc., The reason is mainly due to indigestion of its food. I think Its better to eat grass. It will help to get vomit if any unwanted or undigested food remain it its stomach. No need to worried about this

eating grass is not a weird dog behaviour.it means that in those days your dog is having digestion problems or head aches.the dogs and cats use grass for solving digestion problems and she thows up after because she is cleaning her stomach.u can try to change her alimentation.observe if she is doing this after eating somthing else than usual.
