Just got one for my daughter. She is having a hard time in Math..and the wife of my office mate is a teacher in a good school here..so i asked her to teach my daughter after class. She is doing quite good at it and i guess my daughter like it as well..
but i am still looking for better results. I am paying 100 an hour for her tutorials.. one hour on school days...do you think its reasonable?

Yes, that's already reasonable jazel. Considering that your daughter is having a hard time in Math , it would just be proper to have her tutored by somebody good at it. That way, she will really learn and be trained for it.
Braggin aside, as to my daughter who is now 21 years, studying Medicine, i was her tutor when she was in prep & kinder. But on her grade 1, she doesn't like to be tutored anymore, so i let her be on her own, even with her assignments.
She was a valedictorian when she graduated in elementary, a scholar at Phil. Science High School in a nearby province , a scholar ng bayan in her BS Biology course in UP and now a full scholar of St. Luke's Foundation for her Medicine course in St. Lukes School of Medicine.
I feel useless to her. But i am so proud of her being so independent , yet so smart!
Just keep on letting your daughter be tutored in Math so in no time she will reap the reward.

Oh how i wish my daughter would turn out to be that way.. but then not all of them are alike right? just like me, i was also independent and studies on my own and a fast reader by second grade.. but i guess my daughter is just inclined to all other things including music. I just do not want to force her to be a straight her student...so i just go with the flow except for her Math.. i still want her to excel..

I think it is quite low amount for 1 hour. For the children in Kerala students need to 200rs+ for an 1 hour tuition. You all know that mathematics is a little complicated subjects for the students . This complication mostly occurs mostly due to improper knowledge on mathematics. I mean the base of mathematics which includes, multiplication of fraction, addition and abstraction with -ve and + signs. At first a tutor need to spent almost 5 or 6 hours to explain such simple lessons to my ward. Then for the lessons it needs a lot of time for doing each problem in the textbook.
So as we calculate the money for the base of mathematics we need to pay 1000rs for 5 hours (average amount for the tutor is 200), which is quite very high.
So you are very lucky to get a good tutor with low reward

I have two kids and I tutor them myself. I haven't experienced getting tutor for them but some of the parents I know have so I think the price is just reasonable for every hour tutorial. You just have to make sure your child is getting quality tutorial.

I agree with Beamer. I am also doing tutorials but my minimum charge per hour is Php 250. I think 100 pesos per hour is very cheap, most especially if the teacher is a good one. If you can do the tutoring, then why hire one? Parents can always tutor their own kids. However, those who do not have time to do this naturally will have to hire tutors.

I do feel bad that i cannot help my child on this one, i feel like less of a parent actually. But honestly speaking, i cannot tutor her because of my office work, the company is more demanding now. I go home at 6 and usually arrives at 7..cook dinner and by that time my daughter is already sleepy... and my two other sons are also in tow. So i hired her one of the best.. it was cheap 100 mainly because she is a friend

I think it's very cheap. My son never had a tutor at all and it's something that his school is discouraging so i never got him one. Though all of his classmates have tutors, I still opted not to get him one. He's learning on his own with a little guidance from me and his father. We never did his homework and he doesn't like it when we try to dictate to him the answers. He does allow me to check his works though to make sure that he got it right, but literally it's just him doing all the work. Despite of that, he has been a consistent honor student in Ateneo grade school. Sorry for bragging but i'm just a proud mom.
His school emphasized not getting a tutor because sometimes the child becomes too dependent and sometimes lazy tutors would spoon fed and worse, answer the child's homework instead of just guiding to make their work easier. I hope your tutor isn't like that.

Nope i made sure the tutor is of quality. She works in an international school and also taught in Ateneo..so i know she is getting good teaching.
it is ok, you are not bragging, mommies always feel that way when their children achieve something. My daughter is on the other side of the road..she would rather sing..dance..paint..and draw...and if i do not push her to study, she won't. Her notebooks are full of drawings and doodles!

At first I thought you meant 100 dollars! But then I realized you meant pesos. I'm a student myself and I do lots of tutoring actually. I'm in my senior year of high school and this year is my crucial year which determines which university I'll be going to next year. I did a currency conversion of pesos to Australian dollars and it turned out that 100 pesos is like 2.20 in Australian dollars. I don't know how the conversions work but that is really cheap! But tutoring is good, I started at a young age in elementary school. It gets the child more motivated to learn and school isn't enough. I do class tutoring though with a few other people in my class, one on one is kind of scary for me. But I reckon one on one is better as your could can ask your teacher anything. Right now I do tutoring for like 4 subjects which is around 6 hours a week. Hope your daughter's maths skills improve. I do maths too.

We never went through tutors although looking back, maybe I would have performed better at school with one. I wouldn't say I'm not smart enough - I just wasn't too motivated enough to study. With a tutor, I would have been more disciplined.

I think that's a very reasonable amount. Where I live, a tutor for the primary schools (I assume your daughter's in her primary school :) costs about 250-350 Philippine pesos. And those are college student tutors. Hiring the services of a teacher to do tutorials may cost more. But I guess the important thing is that your daughter learns from these tutorial lessons. I mean, it would be a waste of money no matter how much it is if the tutor fails to make your daughter learn what she's taught.

You didn't mention certain vital facts. Student's age, standard, her interests etc. Here in our place the tuition fees are on monthly basis and for age below 10-12 are quite normal. However, depend on the class, place, tuiotor etc. the rate keep changing. As you mentioned, different subjects also hold different rates. For maths the rates are higher. However, if you child is less than the age of 10, I don't think you need to pay as much on hourly basis. If the child is weak, we can also try from our end to boost the child with tricy technics to learn the lessons. If you can afford to pay that much, well and good, but over burden on child due to paying too much won't be suggestive and ideal.
Regards

My daughter is 7 years old and in second grade..her interest? she is doing good in school but she is more inclined to music and arts so her attention is always at those things which i do not prevent her but i need to fix a schedule for her on that. If i let her do what she wants, she ends up doing nothign about her academe.
She is a bit weak in math so i did hire that tutor for her math subject..the results i still need to see.

Yes in my culture sending children to tuition is common because the parents are too busy to teach them and the school education sucks and only teach the children to memorize and not think, however still have to excel in local government exams to get into better university and get education loan grants and schoolarship hence with the early tuition .

hi,
i still don't have a child but if i would have a child i would never let my child to learn from a tutorial, because i wanted that my child have a competitor children too so that it will become more challenging with him/her the subject and will lead for him/her to study more.

I started a new facebook page to help students in math. You can visit that page and guide your child to take help from there. Visit my profile to go to that page. I think it would help your child.

We didn't find it necessary to get a tutor for our daughter in primary as she was more or less equal in all subjects and was doing above average. But when she reached tenth, we knew she was entering a crucial phase and she also expressed her intention of getting coached. Especially maths. But believe us, the three plus years of tutorial really helped her. Tutorials may be good for your daughter since it is mot too expensive and you wouldn't want her lagging later but you have to make sure she is really benefited. Good Luck!
