Soup is comfort food for me in Winter.

Winter is cold, even when we are cozy inside our houses. So I just love a soup as comfort food. Many times I just put some hot broth in a mug and take it to my computer. I use the mug as a water bottle when hands get too cold and my tummy thanks ne for the extra cuddling. Other times, if I´m hungry, I add a spoonful of instant oats and I bring along a spoon to eat the warm oatas at the end. I use all kinds of bones, fish heads, you name it, to make broths to turn into creams, vegetable soups, minestrones and the like. Do you get warmth from soups and creams in Winter too? So you eat different in Winter than in Summer? Share!

That sounds so good! I haven't had any soup in a while! My husband likes to make the caldo soup and he taught me how to make it! Yummy We have not had much of a winter at all this year here. Today is sunny and supposed to be 65 outside and they said tomorrow it will feel like it is in the teens! Crazy huh? I guess that is just Texas for you. Maybe I will make some soup tonight they say the cold front will be coming in this afternoon! Sometimes I do eat soup in the summer time.

I guess caldo is the spanish word for broth. I use all sorts of bones and all sorts of nice herbs. Latelly I have discovered leeks so I always add a bit of leeks, cut as you would an onion.

We call caldo all sorts of soups that are not creams. We put in whatever we have on hand. What your husband makes is more what we call "cazuela" which is more elaborate. We eat it as a main dish and serve a tomato and onion salad on the side. YUMMY!!!

I do like to eat soups, especially if I make them myself. I am not crazy about canned soups. I like the warmth of it also. Fish heads? I can't picture that. I have heard of using bones. I know when I am finished with a turkey, I will boil the carcass to get the rest of the meat off and use that as the base for a soup. I just don't do it very often. Thanks for the idea. I think I will need to make another soup pretty soon. Today it was warm, but tomorrow it is supposed to get back down to freezing.

I guess that I just never see whole fish so I don't have heads and bones. Most of the fish that I get is from the store and it is mostly deboned before I ever see it.

Hi Marguicha. I eat a vegan diet and I am not good at cooking. Only some tinned soups in]n the supermarkets are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It is possible to make a vegan soup by using soya drink and a vegan vegetable stock cube. I like to eat orange and carrot soup. I also like to eat a think vegetable soup. Adding oats is a superb idea if you feel very hungry. I like to have two slices of vegan bread with my soup. The bread I get has seeds in it like sunflower and punkin. I like warmth from soup in the winter. I eat lots of salad year round. I like cucumber, lettuce, cress and spring onion. I like a vegan salad dressing that has a vinegary taste to it. I like a vegan pasta with a mushroom sauce on it that is vegan. I eat the same sorts of foods year round.

What exactly does the word "vegan" mean, Maxine? What is vegan pasta as opposed to pasta? And vegan vegetable stock? Would it not suffice a vegetable stock made with normal veggies? My normal dressing is olive oil, lemon or vinegar and salt. I add sometimes dry homemade oregano. I love to make a soup with kale and leeks. Yummy!!!

Winter is not as cold in the place I live in, but, I also love soups, specially in cold weather, when is raining outside. My favourites are vegetables cream, specially mushroom, and sea-food soups. I do not particularly like chicken, but, sometimes I can also like chicken soup as well, but, not too much.

I like the potato-onion soup as well, but I do not like to include any meat in it, just the taste of the vegetables, sometimes, I add some mushrooms, sliced thick, just for change.

We don´t have very cold Winters where I live either, but still there is a change in seasons. I like all kinds of soups and most of the times I use chicken broth to make a soup that is more interesting such as a potato-onion soup, a minestrone or a tomato soup.

I lived in a tropical country. But I still consider a soup as my comfort food especially on rainy days. Soup can soothes my stomach always, while a\eating this, I can gave ma time to relax and think just like coffee, but soup was more nutritious. Soup also can relieve my stress and pressure from my work.

We are in Summer now in my country. I like to eat lots of salads and fruits and cold cooked veggies. Most of the meat I eat in this season is cold too. I don´t make soups (except maybe a tomato or corn soup) and I don´t make casseroles or stews either.

It is difficult to cook for one, Jo, even though I have small pots. But what I do is to add less salt to the soups and freeze them. Or I will make a clear broth with bones, herbs and the like and place them in small containers in the freezer. Then I can heat one and add anything I like. Instant oats are wonderful to have on a mug while mylotting. But for a real soup, I add whatever veggies I have on hand. I also like minestrones with a bit of homemade pesto. I´m growing now my oen basil and although the plants are dwarfs as compared to the boughten ones, I know they are very clean.

Yes! I would like to eat many kinds of soup as well! Your description has already whet my appetite!: I will take noodles as an example. In summer when the weather is so hot, we would like to eat chilled noodles that we put shredded cucumber, galic sauce and any pickles we would like to eat into the noodles. In winter we would like to eat noodles with soup. We can put kinds of vegetables, meat, eggs into the noodles to make a delicious dish. Same noodles have different taste!

It seems that what you have in Summer is a sort of noodle salad. I love that and other fresh foods in Summer. But Winter is begging for a hot soup to overcome it. I prefer a soup than coffee in Winter.

Though here in the Philippines, we don't have winter my friend, i also like cooking soups when it's raining outside. The rain makes the atmosphere cold , so the appetite for a viand that is something soupy , is stirred. I also love cooking chicken porridge (arroz caldo) when it's cold and rainy.

yeah it's quite cold here too especially in the early morning friend, well I'm enjoying soup my uncle sent us from the U.S.during Christmas thru the "balikbayan box"( comes with different food stuffs like my favorite "chili con carne", electronics, clothes and shoes, etc...), there are instant noodles like Nissin and Maruchan, but I really enjoy the Campbell soups that I plan to copy when my supply runs out, in fact I'm already thinking of a way to substitute ingredients I do not have here like barley with mung bean sprouts haha...yeah soup, as they say it is hearty.

I make my own soups from scratch, friend. This year I planted tomatoes and I already have 3 almost ripe ones. There are lots of green ones so I hope I will be able to make tomato soups and save some pulp to make more during the Winter.

I like soups too, but I don't like just broth. Thin soup isn't filling for me and I usually like to have a thicker soup with some substance in it. The other night my dad made homemade chicken noodle soup and it was so good because it had chunks of chicken, celery, carrots, and lots of noodles. For me it was the perfect soup because it was nice and thick and filled me up. I also love to eat beef stew when it's cold. There's just something about a nice hot meal on a cold day. In summer I don't really like to have soup that much because it makes my whole body feel warm even when it's already hot out. So I usually have soups as more of a winter food.

It seems most of us think of soups as Winter food. I also eat stews and casseroles more in Winter than in Summer. It also happens with legumes. In Summer, all I can think of is smoothies, fruit juices and salads.

I also like soups very much. Vegetable soups are the one I like the most. Soups are available in small packets called maggi soups and I think they are very tasty. I think it is good to take soups during the winter times and it will helps to keep a person warmer.

We have Maggi soups in my country, but I like to make mine from scratch. I hardly ever buy one of those soups. I buy a piece of chicken or a bone with meat and boil it with an onion, herbs and whole carrots (I use those carrots later for salads and they are tastier). Usually in Winter I cook two types of soups: broths to drink in mugs by the computer and vegetable soups and creams for lunch or diner.

sorry, so late in responding..dearheart..BUT the last two mornings instead of doing a lot of myLotting...guess what I was doing..Making soups....LOL! From T.J.'s (my son)Birthday on Dec. 29...we had Turkey, Ham, Roast Beef and Salmon..I froze the carcasses and leftover's..and have made Turkey Noodle..Leek-Potato-Ham, Ham & Pea...and Creamed Salmon, and freeze them all in portion containers, easy to heat when I get home from work...and a full-meal when eaten with a salad, and a good grain bread...Yummy! Call me a soup-aholic...the smell, the comfort in the tummy..easy on the digestive system! I always make HUGE pots of soup..so that I can freeze it, as I always don't have time to cook..or am TOO tired! I like Stews or "Oleo's" as some call it, too! To re-inforce my soup=aholic...I just love COLD soups in the summertime..like Gazpacho...or Creamed Cucumber! GUICHA...I will tell you what cold is....it's been MINUS 10C the last two mornings and the Cold front is predicted for the next 10-12 days...and Satuday nite we are supposed to get 6 to 10 inches of snow...NOW that is soup weather...LOL!

Dang...forgot to ask about the visit that you are having in March? You will have to keep us posted (altho you will be busy) about this visit...is it some-one from Europe or North america...YOU must be excited, I would already be "antsy"! I had (it's nearly a necessity here)what one would refer to as Central heating, and OIL furnace..but I stopped using it about 10 years ago..and only rely on a Wood Stove...so in this horrible weather..one pulls a chair up very close! Guess what...I "unearthed" the Afghan from it's storage..and started knitting again last nite! I am interested in what you are doing with all the Apricot pulp? And where do you get them from...as Apricots grow here in the Okanagan Valley..so didn't think they grew in S.A. I have a lot to learn, don't I? Living on this Island, guicha...and not being able to rely on GOOD shopping, I opted to have two small chest freezers...so that I can harvest in season! I am not very good at canning (nor wish to be)...freezing or dehydrating is more up my alley. YOU take care, know you are thought of, often! HUGZ

Dearest, I love soups, but I don´t have much more room at the freezer for more soups. I have a fridge with a reasonable freezer on top, but not those giant things. And half of my freezer has apricot pulp now. I hope it will last until the visit of a vegan mylot friend in March. My soup weather is more on the +10ºC. We have 0ºC a few days each Winter at 6 AM. But at that hour I´m in bed. When I get up, it´s probably around +5ºC (very cold). I want to add that I don´t have central heating.

Thanks for answering this old post, william. I love soups too, but I almost never make them in Summer, except for cold soups such as gazpachos. But I`m still in a soup season for me as it`s Spring in this part of the world. Yesterday I had a chunky vegetable soup made with many odds and ends from the garden and the fridge. I add croutons and some parmesan cheese and it gets even better.
