I think I do not fully agree with what you just mentioned. Some trees that were cut down really are replaced with another tree, but the problem is that the replacement is a young one. Its roots are not yet fully developed as well as its branches. It will take many years for that replacement to do the things that the original tree has been doing like firmly holding the soil, bearing fruits, act as shelter to both man and animals to name a few. That is of course if that tree will survive the activities of man and nature. I agree that we need lumber for building our homes, offices, furniture etc but cutting down trees should be properly managed. In my mind, one tree cut down should be replaced with 5 fully matured trees so that we have a buffer of resource and protection always available and in place. Just my two cents :)

It is very alarming that there are lots of
flooding, not only in the Philippines, but
as well as in various countries worldwide.
As far as I know, if I am not mistaken, there
are/were also floods in Indonesia, India, Italy
etc. Illegal logging was the main cause that
brought floods in the Philippines. The govern
ment should be more strict in implementing the
laws against illegal logging.

I think that's one of the major reasons why the flooding occurred. There aren't enough trees due to those illegal loggers or greedy businessmen. There are now materials that are used in construction that doesn't require wood from trees. I feel that we need to temporarily stop logging activities and replenish first the thousands of trees chopped down.

Are you from the Mindanao area. Northern Mindanao is the latest victim of typhoon in the country. It's sad to see in the news the victims who have lost not only their properties but also their loved ones. Up to now, I think some parts are still flooded. Let's hope that they will be able surpass this challenge.

We are reaping the results of illegal logging, deforestation, land conversion and our lack of concern for the environment. These are old problems but the gov't still can't put an end to these due to corruption. It's time we start to care for the environment. Otherwise, we'll be washed away by floods, landslides and other calamities.

Hi,
Cutting of trees is just one factor in the inclement weather we are in. Global warming, plastic manufacture, burning of coal and fossil fuel, altering the atmosphere by electromagnetic interference, natural volcanic eruptions venting tons of hazardous elements, solar flares, galactic aligments... it is really an interplay of human and natural activities on the planet.
The problem could be far wider in scope than you could think of.
