Hi mates, I was surfing through some news channel when I was hit by this news that our captain cool M,S,Dhoni will take retirement from test cricket in 2013. In an interview he had said that if he has to play in 2015 world cup, then he may retire from test cricket in 2013 as he is very much concerned about is health. What fellow mylotters thinks about it? I mean he not in test cricket for very long time. Dont you think it will be too early? Moreover can India make up his absence if he really quit???

I think Dhoni should retire from Test Cricket, if not at least he should step down from captaincy. If you observe his performance is better in short formats of game than in Test Cricket. And doing keeping, batting and Captaincy can take a toll on a person especially when faced with away series against strong teams where India struggles. Psychological scars are more dangerous than physical ones. Everything seems to be fine but it is not. Every defeat, especially demoralizing thrashings can really have an effect psychologically. Indian team repeatedly fails mainly due to that as they are under pressure thinking about a possible failure and loss and inevitable that is what they get! So a fresh mindset and young players are needed who are fearless and have more determination to prove themselves and achieve success. Indian team doesn't have the competitive mindset and a bit laid back. If someone starts dominating they just become submissive, both in batting and bowling. So it is time Dhoni to take a decision and surely it will help team India. Remember Dravid gave up captaincy to concentrate on batting. Dhoni can do the same in Test matches. But he can continue to be captain in ODI. And I also feel India needs a psychologist or a motivator who can pep them up when they get such thrashings! It is a mystery that why can't BCCI think of doing something about repetitive debacles in away series. May be they are just money minded and want ODI and T20? If so then India will never shine in Test Cricket.

I completely agree , Dhoni was never a good test player and defensive captain in tests. This was evident from two series last year, that is in SL and SA where India went as no 1 test team and struggled , but scoreline of 1-1 and later winning ODI world cup saved Dhoni from being highlighted. It was just a matter of time,no wonder he was found out in England and now in Australia.I am sure that you remember Bevan who was a brilliant ODI player but a poor test player.Something similar is the case with Dhoni. He should retire from tests and should concentrate on limtied overs cricket.

Hello guyz, I too think that he can hold his captaincy more if he continues his poor performance in test matches . He is indeed a good player and captain in ODIs and t20s, but not that much good in the test cricket. He need to play much more better at least in this match to manage at least a draw .

Is Dhoni too old to be in test squad? Coz betting upon the too young players is not always a good idea. Though I am not a fan of Dhoni, still I think that Dhoni is enough determined and fearless too. As far as losing overseas is the matter of concern then I will say that it is like an old disease to team India. They are always weak in overseas from the very begining. It is not a new thing. The main reason for that is our BCCI is only interested in making money. They are not bothered at all about this. Yeah you are right that India is always a submissive team. The mentality was changed for few year under Ganguly's captaincy. But they are back in track again.

It will be great for test cricket in India and also for Dhoni if he retires from tests in 2012 itself. He is a brilliant limited overs player and captain ,but a poor test player.Him and Sehwag should concentrate on limited overs cricket and should leave the place for youngsters if India has to compete outside India in tests.

It is not fair at all to compare sehwag and Dhoni in terms of performance in test cricket ( though I think not in any of three format). Sehwag has made two triple century so far, and as far as I know only Sir Bradman had that record. And most importantly Sehwag has got an average of 55.47 more or less which is can not be considered as poor at all. So he has a lot to give. It wont be fair if we want him out of test squad for performing bad in only one series.

He has lot to give but only in subcontinent especially in India. It has been 4 years since Sehwag has made a century outside India.Against swinging ball and any good bowling attack he looks helpless which is not what you expect from your opener. Also he did not perform bad only in one series,Sehwag failed in SA ,then Eng and now in Australia too.On pitches which have bounce and swing ,more technically correct opener is needed who makes things easy for middle order, not a flat track bully like Sehwag.

Though his absence in batting can easily be recovered by Indian team but will they be able to make up the absence of captain Dhoni. I mean if you look at the current team , do you think that there is somebody to fill the gap?

Given the way his batting is going on currently, it is very difficult for him to last even till 2013. I think he will need to start performing with the bat a bit more consistently. I think this is a tough time for him after the 4-0 drubbing in England and this looks like we will have another drubbing here at Australia. So let's see how he responds to this. Cheers! Ram

I was also come know about this news in one of my local news channel . At first, I was just wondering why he think about his retirement at this early stage itself. He said that he does it for the preparation of the coming ODI world cup. But, there are some news that test cricket world cup will be there in 2012 or 2013 .

I Think his decision is right. He have not good carrier in Test cricket past. So better he must look forward for One day & 20-20 format cricket.

I think you are right to some extent. His test career is not so great. And he plays cricket physically. I mean if you watch his batting closely you can clearly see that there is lot of fault in his technique which he makes up with physical movement and force full shots. It is obvious he will not be able to make up those fault if he lose his physical fitness.
