Are people fed up with vampires in story plots?

January 13, 2012 9:14am CST
Vampire-mania. They are everywhere. From Dracula to Edward Cullen, blood-suckers seem to be "in" ALL OF THE TIME. As an aspiring writer, can vampirism still come out as interesting if handled properly or is this trope just bled-dry and people are looking for the new "it" creature? Zombies seem to closing in.

i am from Romania and Dracula's legend is a classic.but today movies and books are just to much.no ofense for the fans of Twilight but it made from vampires some soap opera characters.i remember anne rice's books and Interview with an vampire movie.that was the real thing.every body that wants to make money makes a book or movie and puts some fangs in it.i want the classics back.

I agree, Pandora :) I too am from Romania and I have to say that until Bram Stocker started all this romance approach on Dracula our myths on the subject were quite different. It's fun to see how people from other countries see us though, especially in the movies. In Harry Potter the Weaslys were hunting dragons in Romania, in Grimm is it said the herb that can kill and ogre can only be found here and so on. Quite fascinating country we have :)

Apparently, the British Film Industry as been "advised" to make films that appeal to a wider audience, therefore making more money. Expect LOADS of vampire movies as a result. If a vampire is in a film I refuse to watch it and - judging by reviews I've read of some of them..they're all cr*p lol.

Possibly!

Gah! I love vampires but really, the plots are all so bleh! so is this all the public will look forward to in the next 2 to 5 years, a crappy vamp flick or some sequel to a sequel to a sequel ... or more talking animals?
13 Jan 12
I think there's still room for classic vampires: Dracula-style villains are always a good bad guy, though you generally have to add a little twist somewhere to keep them interesting. The "new breed" vampires - stupid nonsense like Twilight - have nothing to do with the originals. They're vampire light. The 1-calorie version of the real thing. No time for those, personally.

Yeah, I love Dracula but vamps these days are getting a bad rap because of the sparkly debacle that is TWILIGHT. I prefer Alucard from the anime & manga Hellsing. He definitely does not SPARKLE!

bluerhapsody, personally I prefer Saris Victoria (I'm sure that name got garbled in the English character in Japanese show translated into English thing) but that's probably my hormones talking.

Hello, bluerhapsody ! I agree with you, it's hard to find a fresh approach into a myth that's been "sucked" of its juice for so long (to stay perfectly on topic ;))) On the other hand, what seems harder to believe in my eyes is that a low quality story/book/movie like Twilight made so many go crazy over it when there are so many other way better approaches on vampires. And here I want to mention Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles which are amazingly well written and focus more on the philosophy of being a vampire, its impact on a once human mind now facing an eternity ahead , relationships and bonds that can grow between vampires or human and vampires. So my answer is : yes, it's hard to write something along the vampire theme that would impress in this moment, but not because of the latest versions like True Blood (redneck vampires, oh God, the horror! :))) or Twilight or even Vampire Diaries and Buffy (which, if you ask me are way better story of teens and vampires) As for all you Twilight fans that feel offended by my post and will start rating me negatively (last time i said something bad about Twilight i dropped 16 points in one day :))) know that people in this world have the right to an opinion and just because not all of us like the same things isn't a good enough reason to start bashing people. Oh, and bluerhapsody, if you want to start writing something on this theme I suggest you do it rather fast because i think at one point the market will be saturated and people will put aside vampires for a while. At least a few years :) Good luck and if you post/publish anything please send me a link too. I'm very curious and i like reading/discovering new writers!

Hi, Reyachan! Vampires are very interesting to write and read about but with the works so poorly done with, it gets irritating for a classic trope to be used so haphazardly, well in my opinion anyway. And yes, if ever I gather up the courage to actually finish and post a story, I'll send you a link. :) Hopefully, if it is about vampires, it wouldn't suck so much. XD

I'm not just fed up but very fed up. I find it very annoying that most of the stories that I've read has the same plot. How I wish that there's a more interesting plot in the next few years.

Once in a while everyone was terribly feared when they heard some kind of dracula or vampire stories. but day by day its value of fear is totally decrease to everyone's heart.and modern civilization is build up in logical ways.so, basically, now its fear reaction is turn into funny sequence.

Yes, people are more scared of viruses and terrorist attacks now.

i think with you being a new writer you may be able to bring a new light/view of vampires since you have learned all the other ways people have used (and abused) them in story lines. you have tons of examples of what to NOT do and people seem to really want vampires in a NEW light. the shows they have now such as vampire diaries have them walking in the daytime and so does twilight (which i refuse to watch lol) and they are huge hits. i think people are sick of the typical vampire so i think you being new could really give you an advantage in making them interesting

Definitely! It has had the life sucked out of it! I'm fed up of pale interesting young people with big teeth! There are much more fascinating things to write about and film. I'm a Sci Fi fan and one of the reasons I so admire this genre is that it is full of wonderfully inventive ideas that really make you think for yourself!
13 Jan 12
Sci-fi is interesting but I was more drawn to the supernatural or the paranormal genre for some reason. Pale interesting young people with big teeth eh? XD Besides some of the sci-fi themes get a little too technical for my escapist daydreaming self.

Well I guess it varies for people. Some enjoy certain monsters or elements in stories that others may not want to read or watch all the time. It's like how some people might love mushy romance movies or books, and never get tired of them. But for others, once they've seen two or three, there isn't anything appealing about it anymore to them. Personally, I'm liking this vampire thing. Granted, I haven't read many vampire books, but I've still read a few and I have a number of them on my list of books to read. I think it depends on how you go about writing the book. I mean there can be many different takes on a vampire novel. First of all, the genre. Is it horror, romance, comedy, mystery, etc. Is a major plot point the fact that one or more characters is a vampire, or is it just a passing fact? I think the main thing to consider is that your story is interesting and well-written. Fans of paranormal and vampire novels will enjoy reading it even if other people are over the vampire "fad".

I have also noticed this they just seem to be everywhere but I have no intest in them what so ever. I thought Dracula was kind of neat but thats because he was the first. I think there needs to be a whole new creature created.

Well it's because of Twilight that makes people a bit fed up with vampire stories. Not to mention that every now and then there are movies and TV series about vampires too. But maybe if you can think about a unique plot and twist for your story, it might be interesting.

I like vampires though as a fanfiction and poetry writer, I can't stand them. Any non-fanfiction I write is sci-fi dealing with aliens, new species, intergalactic battles, or fantasy with the gods and so on. I do write non-fanfiction vampire stories but they aren't so... fairy-ish. They do kill humans, they can't go out in the sunlight and for the most part they are solitary. I only write them every once in a while though as I focus on slightly darker stories. I used to like vampires, but they have overdone it with the sweet, emo-like, I don't want to drink blood vampires. The vampires who'd prefer to drink an animal's blood then ever drink human blood. I prefer old style vampires and other vampires that are truly vampires. I love Brom Stroker's Dracula. I love the Anne Rice Chronicles. Newer stuff like the Vampire Diaries, True Blood, and whatever the hell Stephanie Meyer thought she was writing about in Twilight (I refuse to call those things vampires... tinker bell is about as much of a vampire as they are.), are too much like the friends i had in high school who bought fangs because they thought it was cool. I might get back into it with more older vampires but with the vampire-mania now, if I were you, I'd go for lycans.
15 Jan 12
Lycans, eh? Thank you for the tip. Yeah, the brooding emo vampire is really annoying. Vampires have lost a lot of street cred because of that!

I personally fed up with all Vampire stories. I like though True Blood because it has something different like a kind of irony and sarcasm blend with romance and adventure..But i think that enough with all these, people want something new...

Yes the vampire story genre is getting badly over done right now. I'm a writer and a reader and there is just way too much of it out there right now. I work on an online site where so many people have jumped on the bandwagon that I just flip to something else rather than read and review the latest vampire story. I like and appreciate good writing but I like to see a little more originality.
