YIPES, we just got our renewal for our house insurance. They raised our wind and hail damage deductible from $500 to $5000.
They also raised our premium 20%. Justification: Weather patterns in Texas. The cost to rebuild our house raised from 16K to 22K.
What do u guys think?

They're a business that has to make a profit to serve its stockholders. In all areas where there have been major problems, insurance rates have gone up. Put yourself in their shoes.

I would love to put myself in the shoes of stockholders, however my husband and I are retired on a fixed income. We got a small raise of 3%, are we supposed to pay stockholders or pay for the insurance that is required by the bank.

that...is a horrendous kick in the budget! And it really sounds like they have you over a barrel...seeings that you HAVE to carry insurance..OR do you? Just asking...as there is legislation in place where I live, if your mortgage is less than a 1/4 of the value...it is your choice! That is only a 6K raise in rebuilding...it seems a little out of line...I concur, after your mini-vacation...TIME to shop for better rates! Hope you can have an enjoyable holiday with this hanging over your head!

Thanks for the complement, TexLady, greatly appreciated!
Your discussion has been food for thought, to me...but the answers I give may not apply in your area! I have noted that you say this is based on recent weather of the last year...seems like just another excuse to raise rates..as this does NOT seem to be based on ANY long-term stats, and that is usually what is the basis!
I am a home-owner, and have been in the same home for 33 years, and faced all sorts of "home-owner" dilemnas...including flooding. But never did my rates take that kind of jump...nor my deductible!
I think I would arm myself with every piece of data..Weather patterns, Building costs, etc! Thinking more about the building costs...I would phone a few builders and find out the price of re-building per square foot to lock-up! It also, seems strange to me...with the recession that is looming in the U.S., that building costs would rise in leaps and bounds! I am in the building trades (a certified Tiler)...and when our building (and economy) is recessive, our rates go down...NOT UP! We need to lower our rates and create our own work!
I really hope you can take the time to "arm yourself" with all pertinent info..and then shop! Have a great...great vacation...I am jealous...we are facing the first blast of Old Man Winter..starting last nite!

Thank you, so kindly ...dearheart for the BR! Gave me relief, when I finally was able to access this...(computer probs with accessing e-mails)...as I had so worried about you during the HORRIBLE onslaught of weather you have just had! I prayed that you and yours were safe! Take care...and once again, thank you!

We are headed on a short vacation to meet some online friends and become offline and online friends...I am looking forward to the short trip. when we return will be looking...called other companies they raised deductible 100% not $500 to $5000.
We could live with $1000

I saw a friend post a picture on facebook about some snow in Houston! He said something about the weather patterns are changing.
Is this part of it?! If it is, then I guess insurance companies have a reason to increase their insurance premiums (aside from satisfying their stock holders, of course).
