If you want to play avi movies on your MAC then try "DivX 7" player, in this way you can download movies which are in avi format.

Oh that's a simple problem with a simple solution and they are free. You don't need a converter actually.
Just like Zer0Stats said download Perian to play MS Windows video files in Mac OS Quicktime video player.
Another one is downloading and installing the VLC player. Which is one of the most favorable video player of any kind of operating systems like MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS. It can also play Real video files (like .rm, .rmvb).

I think this is a codec issue. Have your tried checking with Apple Support already?

by default MAC doesn't support AVI files but you can download codecs and other players like divx and VLC they can play AVI if they can't then it's time to download the codecs

I'm not a Mac PC user, although I have an iPad, and it also doesn't read files iin avi format. But it wouldn't hurt if you install a converter. I myself had installed a converter. Although my Pc can read mp4, a software that I use for work doesn't read them so I need to convert them to avi instead.

It has been my experance that, Mac has a flaw as it's vary particular on what it can and can't play. Have you had this issue before? Did it just start? Do you have this problem with other mac-based computers or tablets? If the answer is no, than there is a bug with your particular nacbook. If the answer is yes, then download the suggested software to play a wider ranger of files.
