Why are religions anti-human rights?

I am talking ALL regions here; not, just one in particular.
Every religion out that seems to feel that people only have ONE right and that is the right to blindly follow the teachings of the religion.
I am not saying that everything a religion teaches is wrong - things like not murdering, not stealing, how to worship and where, etc,; these are things that help a societies members get along with each other.
But, religions go much further than basic societal guidelines.
Religions want to control every aspect of their followers lives, stripping away basic human rights - how to dress, what to eat, who can work and what type of jobs are acceptable, body art, whether you can use medicine or not, whether you can practice birth control or not and what types of birth control if some are acceptable, who you can love, how you can express your love, etc.
Religions also want to control nonmembers and force them to follow the religion's guidelines. They want to make or change laws. They encourage their members to "punish" people who are different or do not believe or conform. Religions have long histories of subjugation of others and slavery (both as slaves and slave owners).
People should have the right to decide basic things for themselves. They should not be expected to relinquish their rights just because they are part of a specific religion or because they live near others who belong to that religion.

Someone who follows blindly hasn't bothered to learn what God has to say, but has allowed others to do all the scriptural studying for them. Get into the word and learn for yourself what God is saying concerning these topics.

Please remember that many of them do not have the chance. There are many religious schools around the world that start brainwashing young children reading to them from religious books (and making them memorize them) but telling them to accept the religious leaders interpretation of the meaning of those same words and NOT question that interpretation.
Even families that cannot afford a religious education still have their children attend worship services for children which serve the same purpose.
If you have been taught these things since you were a small child; many people will never even THINK that what they have been told might be questioned.

Many people are still isolated because there are still many countries that do not educate females at all and much of the education taught to males is memorization.
These same countries have a very tight control over media of all types. So even listening to the radio or tv does not give them a clue. Even if they do have the ability to read, newspapers are controlled by the government (which is under religious domination) and the internet is censored and very limited.
Those of us who live in countries with religious freedom and freedom of the press have no real concept of how isolated these people still are today.

Unless someone is totally isolated from the rest of the world, and most people are not, there should be enough evidence of other views to get those who question in their minds, something to wonder about.

As far as I know there is one religion that is accepted by God. All rules and regulation in a religion is determined by God, and is clearly stated in a Holy Book.
The Holy Book is a guide for all human beings. God teaches people to respect one another, to live in harmony. One person can not influence others to follow what he believes. He can only convey what is mentioned by God in the Holy book.

I am sorry; but, I do not believe that God would limit himself to one tiny portion of the planet and only reveal himself to that tiny group of people.
I believe that since God's power is infinite that he would have revealed himself to many people around the world and the religions we have today are the result of how he revealed himself to each group.

Some of what you say is true. However, you are painting all religions with one broad brush stroke. To do that is wrong. I am not familiar with any religious body that is guilty of all the things you mentioned.

That is because I took a small sampling of a few of the most publicized ways that various religions are trying to control people today.
The truth is that the 3 best known offenders are various branches of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Their attempts to control every aspect of a persons life are legendary and are still happening and making news today.
Other major religions around the world also have restrictions on their followers daily lives; but, they do not hit the newspapers as frequently.
Perhaps you need to become better acquainted with what is happening in the world today.

Certain very strict sects of some religions are the ones that make the news. Those who quietly try to live by the Talmud, Bible or the book of Islam. Sorry, but I do bolt remember how to spell the name of the last religious book. Yes, religion does require its followers to meet certain standards, but so do fraternities, business groups, and even society in general. Don't think that I'm unaware what some sects that have splintered off from the main group are doing. I still maintain that it is unfair to demonize religion in general because of the actions of a few.

While God doesn't given us a license to behave outside His will, He does give us free will to decide whether or not we'll be obedient to Him and warns us of the consequences if we don't. God uses religion as a warning device to remind people of the things for which God doesn't approve. God won't force you to live according to His statutes and religion has no control over whether or not you'll obey God.
In today's society I don't understand why anyone would get worked up over religious "rules" unless one felt there was validity in those rules and wished it was otherwise.

Depending on where you are in the world - Christians are trying to ban both abortion and contraceptives. Muslims are beating women for wearing pants or wanting to drive a vehicle or work outside the home. Jews in Israel are trying to bring back segregation of women. Many religions are persecuting homosexuals and are even killing them without any repercussions. All of this and a whole lot more and all in the name of religion.
There is NO validity in these religious rules and these are things we should be free to decide on our own whether we wish to follow this religious dictates.

Since, I do not know every religion that exists, you are probably right. The religions that started out in the Middle East (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) are VERY controlling.
I also do not know what religion you follow; so, I cannot use examples from your religion to prove whether you are correct or not. Sometimes we are content in our religious practices and beliefs and do not realize how controlling they are simply because we agree with what they teach and we were raised to agree with those beliefs.

If you will double check; I beleieve you will find there is a difference between "religion" and "being religious". You can be a religious person without subscribing to a particular religion.

Yes, and there are plenty of particular religions that support human rights. You do them a disservice to erase them with your phrasing.

exactly why I don't subscribe to any man made religion and won't. None of my daughters were slotted into any particular religion but they all were exposed to many. in my opinion, the choice was theirs. I think it's good to know about all of them and yet keep an open mind also. Once you slot yourself into one belief system then you shut down from further learning.

Good for you; but, right now we are seeing a resurgence of religious activism that is trying to limit those choices.

This because every religion is basically a confidence trick and like any confidence trick it is necessary to keep control of what the "mark" is thinking. I do not say that every priest is a confidence trickster as some do believe that what they are saying is the truth so they are also being conned. Philosophical religions such as Buddhism do suffer a lot less from this aspect than deity based religions. This is confidence trick aspect is clearly show in one of the fastest growing religions and that is the Mormon religion. Joseph Smith was a con man and the story of how he found this golden book that nobody else saw and how once copied it disappeared is clearly such a blatant con that is almost beyond belief that anyone could fall for it and yet the religion he founded built Salt-lake City on once of the most unpromising sites in the world. This I think illustrates just how much some people need to believe in something even if it so clearly nonsense. This is a very common human trait

Reason #45,729 the fish doesn't subscribe to any religion.
Religion is a very odd thing. Almost every religion claims to know how the world's gonna go -- how it gets by, how we get by, how it all ends. Yet there's not any evolution of thought in religion that exceeds the time period in which the texts were written. Odd, that. But hey. Who knew slavery was bad or that women deserved to be treated as equals?
Yeah. Most religions I know of demand obedience and strip dignity. Of course, it's rare you'd find someone believing in a religion feeling as if their dignity has been stripped or as if their rights are lesser than anyone else's. But religion sure is a controlling thing.
The way I see it, if a deity wants me to do what it says, it can come tell me. No mixed message. No wind blowing at a funny time. No Tim Tebow throwing for 316 yards with an average of 31.6 yards per pass. Like the Price is Right, baby -- come on down!
At the time when most religions were conceived, human rights weren't two words that even made sense to put together. So, at least for me, that says everything one needs to know about the validity of religion. But that's just me.

I think that is why so many of them are getting desparate and are trying to limit access to the internet and whey they are trying to impose their views in the political arena.
As people become more educated, they feel more confident with examining their own consciences and make moral decisions themself. This make the religious community very worried.

Speakeasy,
I agree with you. I for one who studied sociology observed that religion control the society -- example, women in the society. Don't you know that virginity is a myth? -- but still men and women in the society believed that all women in the world should bleed in the first night of marriage even if it is a myth. Not all women bleed in the first night of marriage.
There are many of them and I really can't mention them all and I think this is the reason why secularist and humanist came because of what the religion done to our society. They feel that religion control the society and of course, religions have no social unjustice when it comes to our society like for example, women's right in the Philippines. Catholic church forbid reproductive health bill for women here in the Philippines.
I just don't understand why and I just don't want to think about it.

I just don't understand why and I just don't want to think about it."[/i]
The reason is very obvious - if people are not allowed to use birth control they are indiscriminately breeding a lot of new little Catholics for the church to brainwash. That is why the Catholic church is against homosexuality - they are NOT breeding a new generation of Catholics.

My thought is control. All religions are no different than organizations that want control. I don't know many religions outside the main religions like Christianity, Islam, Hebrew, and a few others that actually push their views on others but those are the ones you hear about the most. When studying as just a wiccan, I never tried to do as such.
Back to what I was saying though, it is all about control. It is all about the brainwashing done to them by whatever religious sect that makes them believe they are above everything and can control everyone. It is the god-like promise that follows most religions with promises of immortality when we are all really just going to rot in the ground. Just for one moment... imagine starting your own religion. Imagine how many people out there are desperate for answers than you can tell them anything as long as it makes some off the wall sort of sense, they will follow you. They will worship the god you created. They will put money into your church. They will do anything you want like an animal you teach to do tricks or someone under hypnosis.
You can get them to do anything. Believe anything all for the sake and favor of your creation. You have that power... and then human nature kicks in. You want to control more of the populous. Your teachings start slightly changing in order to suck more people in. If you were a demon as some believe in then you have just harvested millions of souls by the people who blindly follow you. They want laws changed in order to suit your creation. They want to kill in order to look good to your creation.
You have the control. You can do whatever you want. Then when you pass away someone else in the people you controlled will rise up and continue to lead them along and control them.
They are anti-human rights BECAUSE they are made to control the masses. You can not control the masses if you let so many people be 'free'. Its common sense. Don't believe me.. right now with the 2012 predictions ask how many people are turning to religion in hopes of a salvation that only exists in their mind?

Good points.
What is going on in the US regarding the upcoming 2012 election, is why for the first time in decades I will be voting for the Democratic candidate.
Even though we profess freedom of religion and separation of church and state - the religious extremists in our country have taken over both the Tea Party and the Republican Party and no one is willing to stand up and call them on it.

My point of view as a THEIST person, is we are created by God, and religion is not a man made, but from God! So all the rules cames from it are from God! We never know what really right and wrong, don't we? All cultures had the diffrent views bout what right and wrong! Just God knows the real truth!

Even members of the same religion disagree on many things - that is why there are so many different divisions of each religion.
As you said, "Just God knows the real truth!". He is the one who will judge each one of us separately and we will have to face that judgement by ourselves. The church leader will not be there beside us saying - "she only did what we told her to do". So, don't try to control every little thing because religious leaders will have to face judgement too and if they are wrong THEY wil have to pay the price.

Where did you get THAT idea?
Christianity is about accepting Jesus Christ as your savior; and, he was definately a questioner and did not obey all the religious laws they had at the time. If he had been a good little Jewish boy and obeyed all the laws of the time; there would be no Christianity today.
