Last quarter of 2011 we have seen a potential drop in sales for hardware and software in the video game industry. December is the month where the three major players Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo expects more sales but unexpectedly it turns out to be the worst month for the big three. Most brutally affected is Nintendo's Wii console, wherein almost 55 percent drop in sales was recorded much lower than last year of 2010. Many things can be attributed to the decline in sales of the Wii, first off is the announcement of a new console from Nintendo, the Wii U, second people as getting tired of the console due to lack of graphical power as compared to the two competitors from Microsoft and Sony. Another major factor is the lack of third party software support, dwindling releases of game for the Wii played a great effect in it's power to lure customers in buy the console. Many people think that the Wii is in decline and they are worried that if they buy one now, maybe next year no more games are released for it and render the console useless. Do you own a Wii, or are you still planning to get one, is it really on it's way to extinction? Share what you think.

I never liked Wii in the first place. They should have stuck with the usual: joysticks. I wouldn't mind playing games that require you to get up and move your @ss off, but playing every game just like that can get too lame and boring. Not to mention tiring, in every sense of the word.

It was a great innovation by Nintendo to feature a motion controller when the Wii came out during it's launch. It has generated so much hype and interest towards how to play games through motion control. Standard controllers or joysticks were basic features of a console but the Wii has started what Microsoft and Sony are going now, motion controlled gaming. That has made the Wii so popular to families around the globe. Critics even said before Nintendo has started a new era of gaming, with the introduction of motion sensing controllers, but again the lack of software support, the usual Nintendo exclusive games of Zelda and Mario, tough competition in terms of hardware performance from Microsoft and Sony, and the upcoming Wii U has dwindled the Wii's sales profit for the past two years. The Wii sports games and the Mario/Zelda tandem has become lame and pure boredom, gamers are craving for more game diversity, and the motion controller has prevented such games to exist. If Nintendo should have included a standard button controller for the Wii, maybe third party developers can still make the Wii interesting.

Definitely right, at first it was really interesting when it first came out, and became hugely popular because of its family oriented games and the use of motion controllers. But when new games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 came out and less releases for the Wii, more consumers opted to buy the competitors consoles. Dramatically the sales declined for the Wii, the games became too lame and familiar, people started to complain about it's graphics and the like.

To my view, Nintendo never had the advantage against Sony. They made what seemed like state-of-art gaming consoles but it remained fun at first. The same old movements you do with different games got too old for gamers, I guess, that's why they switched to Sony and Microsoft. To think that I was actually planning to buy me a Wii console... I would've regretted it.

That is what most gamers worldwide are waiting for, a price drop. Consoles which costs almost $500 two years ago might go down half or even lower than their original price as years pass by or when new consoles are announced to come out. The Nintendo Wii has suffered tremendous hype when it first came out and has been a current leadr in sales during its peak, but as time goes by, sales of it drops because of lacking software support from third party developers and stiff competition from Microsoft and Sony. We as gamers would love to see our consoles get the biggest game library to keep us playing, yet the Wii didn't satisfy enough core gamers and the games became one-hit wonders then plain boring. I know with this news of a price cut, some consumers will be pleased specially those who wasn't able to get the Wii when it first came out.

I have a Nintendo Wii and to tell you the truth, I only played it once. Yeah the game was fun and had fun playing with my dad, but it's not a console that will keep me playing. I in the other have been playing the Playstation 3 a lot. Playstation 3 games are fun and addicting to play. I'm really sick and tired in seeing a Mario game. If they would bring more third parties games, I'm sure I would play the Nintendo Wii more like I used too with the Super Nintendo, but sadly there isn't a lot of good games that doesn't have Mario in it. After that I got Nintendo Wii, I'm not sure if I will buy a WiiU when it comes out. I'll just stick with my Playstation and Microsoft gaming consoles.

Yes that is true, when the Wii came out it was really a very interesting console, and paved way to a new era of gaming. That is why Microsoft and Sony has developed their own motion controllers which is the Kinect and Move because of what the Wii has presented. However as you have said, the Mario games bundled with the Wii has drawing power for the console especially to hardcore Mario fans, but the issue of short third party support for more games really affected the Wii's popularity for the past two years. Performance wise too, the Wii is lagging behind the two powerhouse consoles Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively. What makes a console survive longer despite announcement of new systems is it's game library, take for example the Playstation 2, we can't imagine in Japan, it is still one of the top 5 best selling system last year 2010. We can't imagine the system still draws more sales then the PSP Go in Japan. The diversity of games for PS2 has strengthen its hold in the market till now. The Wii could be hurled to extinction much like the Dreamcast from Sega, wherein lack of games led to it's demise for good dragging even Sega to be reduced to game developer not as a major competitor against Nintendo and Sony.

I have a wii and I don't really use it that much. When I do use it, it's for the Wii fit and it's been about a year since I've even used that.
The wii is no match against the Xbox or PS3. The graphics are horrible, the games are pretty lame, and overall there's just not too much you can do with it. I'm sure that if sales keep up the way they are now, then the Wii will probably become "extinct" and Nintendo will have to come up with a new console that will be able to compete with Microsoft and Sony.

I agree with you there, possible extinction is what the Wii is heading. People was very excited with the Wii when it first came out just because of the motion controlled games it offered. That time motion control is a new genre for gamers around the world, and people got really into it. However, when the two game giants Microsoft and Sony entered the fray with their own Kinect and Move controllers, plus a vast array of games that support those controllers, the Wii has lost it's foothold in the games market share. People got tired of Mario and Zelda, they wanted variety and new games for the Wii, but the dismal release of new games for it, rendered the Wii games lame and boring. The Wii now is just a party console, not a time consuming machine in every home now. The news of this sales drop has proven what gamers think of the system now, pure boredom. The announcement of a new Nintendo Wii console also hurt the system and the bad performance in terms of comparison to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 even damaged it's reputation. Some even call the Wii as a "Mom's console" for a reason.
