I leave my computer on all the time...I have never noticed that there is a disadvantage for leaving on. I use to work from home on a computer and I was advised by my job before my equipment was installed that useing the computer and leaving it on does not use much electricity at all, which was what I was really concerned about. But does it really make a difference if you leave it on continuously???

it will make your computer lifespan lesser because every time your computer hot some of small chip set and small wire on your computer get weaker and weaker in a long time it will be melted because of heat and if small parts becomes melted it can cause hang up to your computer.

I think even if it is a computer, it deserve a rest. I would not suggest you leaving your computer on for the whole day unless it is very important to do so. Power surge is one of the major problem that can damage a computer especially during those heavy rain days.

It simply can damage all electrical appliances even TVs. That is why it is advisable to switch off electrical appliances during those heaving rainy days.

Computers are great! - Thanks to the computer, this old photo of me can survive...I love and care for my computer. It gives so much to me.
I leave my computer on for many hours at a time; and often when I leave home for a very short time, I'll leave it on. But I am working on it on and off all day. And I never leave it on without a good reason. I don't think leaving it on does it any great harm, although it could be said that by doing so, one is making the machine work unnecessarily, and that in time, this could result in its become exhausted, worn out. But of course, this will take a long, long time. I just feel that leaving it on for no purpose is somehow wasteful. I may be wrong.

Oh problem could be that someone can get into your computer. I know this because I know someone who does this for a living, (as in working for the police to get the bad guys) and one way to do this is to get on someones computer and I don't mean by sitting down at the keyboard, I am talking about sitting outside your residence and getting on...

Thanks for responding carmelanirel, wow that sounds cooky and scary...what I will say about that is that if they want to sit outside my home looking for bad guys on my computer, MORE POWER TO THEM... I don"t live like that and neither do I involve myself with bad guys and they surely aren't hanging out in my home....

That may be true bjc, but what about guys who CAN do this and doesn't work for the good guys? Those who are out to do you harm? That is where the problem lies, though I don't know how common it is, but even when I am online now, I take chances that something may happen. But at least I am here and may see something that isn't right, if I were not here, then I wouldn't catch anything different until it is too late..

I always leave it on when I go to work, I leave it downloading games and videos, so to me it's an advantage. My electricity bill isnt big at all, new computers now a days have great energy saving tecnologys so I don't think it influences on the bill.

There is no problem at all in leaving on all the time, technically, computers are able to run unattended for months if properly configured. I generally power it off when I stop using it, unless there is some job that it can do on its own in the meantime. As I'm on some torrent sites, I like to leave it seeding to raise my ratio there. Also when working, leaving it on makes it available to connect to it remotely and check mails and so without using the company connection. About the power bill, of course it will consume more energy, but I don't think it's that much after all, computers don't consume that many power even on peak consumption. The worst problem you must watch out for is overheating. While the coolers will continue to function, make sure it's on a fresh place, remembering that in case of a problem, you can't run to power it off quickly.

I turn mine off when not in use. It is equivalent to a light bulb left on. If your computer was part of a network in a large office then there are advantages for the network administrator if all the PCs are on. But for home use there are few good reasons to leave it on and many good reasons to turn it off.

Leaving a computer on all the time makes the fan burn out. My father in law leaves his on all the time and has gone through a lot of fans. It also allows people more time to invade your computer such as hackers if its on all the time. I just read that in a thing from consumer reports. It does waste electricity and I try to save as much electricity as I can so I shut it off when I'm not using it. Whenever there is a storm and the power goes out it can mess up the computer. One time there was a storm and I had left the computer on. When I went to turn it on in the morning it would not start up it had crashed. I had to spend $150 to have someone get it running again and put all the files and everything back onto my computer.

Well it might not seem much as far as the power bill is concerned, but at does rather add up over the weeks, months, years, whatever. I'm really all about rather able to save about as much money as I can. Of course, there is just something about me wanting to have the computer off because its in my bedroom, where I sleep, and the lights on the computer would keep me awake all throughout the evening. I think that by giving a computer a break, it also increases the life of the computer. Which obviously is something that is going to be great for me and I'm sure others, as I want to really get every single moment that I can out of the electronics right in my house. So really that is something and wearing out the computer by leaving it on all of the time, might cut about a year or two off of it.

I don't know if there is a huge disadvantage of it. You might consider wear the electrical part of the computer faster than normal. Or you also might consider the power consumption of your electricity bill daily if you have it on all the time. That is the disadvantages I would think of when it comes to computer on all the time.

It will overheat eventually if you leave it on for too long. Just my opinion though because that's what a friend of mine once told me and he's a technician. We have to let the computer rest once in a while.

Well, maybe there is only a small amount of electricity usage if you leave your computer switched on all the time. However, the parts inside it are still running when the power is on. Having it on all the time can heat up the parts which eventually can lead to degradation of the computer part. Also, I have heard of cases wherein a house was burned and fire spread out due to a laptop left switched on in bed. So if it won't really hurt, just turn your computer off. It can also help in reducing the amount of heat released to the environment which can cause warming.

We are not advised to leave the computer on, for a very long time. Especially when leaving the house. It might get short circuit, and will start a fire. So we make sure that all the appliances are unplug. But, When we're home, we can leave it on for a very long time. But we still do turn it off if we are going to sleep.

When I go to sleep, I turn it off. Although computer is not human, it needs to rest whether it asks for it or not. Just like some of the comments here, it could overheat after prolong periods of time.

I always put my computer off once I have used or finished using my computer and left it locked. The thing is when we let our computer open, someone could get into our computer and did anything out of our concern.

It could overheat. I've had that happen to my computer once, and it sucks getting a new one. If it hasn't happened yet, then it probably won't happen, but just be careful.
