Just this morning, as I am reading an advertisement looking for a managerial position, I found one requirement strange. It includes the age which is 20 to 30 years old. As an applicant you are descriminated with your age One more thing, the age of 30 is young for a managerial position, just a thought! I mean not enough experience because a student normally graduates at the age of 21. With this, it is not assumed that the same year or the following year she may land a work related to her field. It takes years to find a job, this is in my country. How could you hire a person to become a manager with 2 or 3 years experience only? What do you think about this?

Irene, i ever came across some companies preferred to hired a much younger age candidate to fulfill the managerial post. One of the main reason is, they wants to cut-down the office expenses. By getting younger age candidate, they don't have to give high salary. Because those who goes to work at a younger age due to not enough working experiences, willing to work at a much lower and cheaper salary scale. After all, the company still the winner, since they can always train that young candidate to do the same job which an experienced candidate can do. And thus, had saved them quite a lot of money.

Thanks for the "Best Response", Irene. Too bad, grow younger age portion is not available yet in the market. If only this portion is available, i am sure many senior candidates would want to give it a try, including me...

You deserve it! How I wish the younger age portion will really be available so that I will be the first to become a member followed by you! I believe it will not only make us young at heart but physically young, juicy, palatable ( on bed) and regain the coca cola shape!

Bulls eye there! Just too bad for the cost cutting of some companies. But you are definitely right that they really want to get rid of high wage an experienced applicant calls for. I wish I will get young again if this is always the case

argh, it's happening all around the world, the age discrimination thing. Here, companies usually want people who are 18-25 to work for them. With our educational system, we graduate from college by the age of 21 or older. In other words, companies dig young and fresh graduates to work for them and reject old people. It's odd because I believe older people are more ideal because they are more experienced and responsible. I hate age discrimination. I don't really mind the age or the experience as long as the employee does great at work, is responsible, is a quick learner and skilled at what he does.

Same for my country, fresh graduates seems having more chances being employed. It is because they are not demanding very high pay. Where else, those experienced employees seems very hard to get a very good pay job, once they leave their current jobs. I am one of those unlucky employees.

This is a problem that our labor department should address. Age discrimination. I don't know why most companies would hire only those in their twenties up to their thirties only. I have had the problem ten years ago when my business failed and I was trying to get a job. At that time I was 31 and i could not get a job because I was overage. That time if you're a female and want to get a job as a manager, you have to be 20-28years old. Like most laws here in country, this criteria for getting a job is also outdated.

You hit the mark anne! I am also confused with such age requirement. It should have been better if after graduation, the graduate is given a job for her to gain experience. On the other hand, people with real managerial skills go to waste. We better stick to business or through internet earning

Maybe for a position in a small scale only. You are right about that. A managerial position should be filled with those who are experienced. At the age 20 - 30, applicants are still young and have no experience as a manager. You haven't mentioned the other qualifications like experience and so on.

Yeah,I did not mentioned other qualifications such as experience because it follows with age. I mean, if you are young, you also have a limited number of years of experience especially in countries where their is a tight competition in one vacancy. However, you are also correct in implying that young ones are good for small scale managerial psotions. This is to give them the head start to become a full "pledge manager" in the future

I would say it's discrimination. Lately I was browsing the online job sites and I found the age requirement to only up to 30. I won't argue with it if it's a job that actually younger ones can do. But well, for some positions especially managerial positions, they should look for a more experienced one rather than one with the age starting to 20 only

Yes, you are right there! I would also not argue if it is a job for beginners. But for sensitive positions requiring sound decision making, planning etc. I would say experienced applicants are still prefered. 20 is too young for such position

hi irene, I totally agree with you...but if you think 30 is young what about 20 that must have been a typo...But that goes to show how companies have a problem or an issue with the older adult even with all the qualifications....its descrimination at its best.... Good luck on your job hunt...

Hi there too! No, 20 is never a typo problem. I always see it in the advert. If it is a typo, then it should not have been repeated for many times. I think the problem here is the issue on adult applicants The hiring people might be outsmarted by the most qualified applicant I never hunt job anymore. Let's stay here in mylot!

That is discrimination, and in some countries, the labor laws prohibit discrimination against age, gender, ethnicity and religious affiliations. But I do however think that 30 is just about right for a managerial position and 2-3 years experience is sufficient for someone to hold that position. Sometimes it doesn't have to be purely some managerial experience that can land you that job. Human Resources also look at other experiences and skills you have. I mean, they look at the totality.

It is really discrimination. A friend who is an HRM once told me that putting the age in an advert for job vacancies is a form of discrimination. However, it seems it is difficult to get rid of such requirement. I always see it in every job vacancy adverts. I agree with you with the totality of the applicant. I was once appreciated with one of the hiring officers in China when she told me I was hired not because of my experience but because of my personality.

Yes, you have a point there my friend. But until you come inside and apply you will not know. Sometimes, those age requirement isn't really followed by companies. In the course of interview, once they have seen that you have so much experience on the managerial position, they will not mind if you are beyond the age requirement. Besides, they also take into consideration the way you dress. A managerial position requires that your dress with authority.

Maybe they are hiring that young for the managerial post so they can still control them. They seem to not like experienced people anymore.

Age is not the matter at all coz no person can be judged by his or her age. In todays world every one needs young staff in any company of firm coz their mentality is really different, which sometimes proves to be a major benefit for a company and sometimes even make mistakes if not taken a step perfectly due to lac of experience but never think that this age group cant do without experience For example do you know the youngest president of India Shree Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was elected as the secretary of Andhra Pradesh Provincial congress committee and remained in that office for ten years. So if he can why cant our youngsters.

It's case to case basis. There some companies that hire's young professionals. But I think Managerial level is tough. Companies need to think twice though, before hiring applicants.

Yes. It is actually case to case basis. It all depends on the hiring company. So what we learn from school having all those experiences before landing a managerial position is not actually true. But you are right that companies should have a second thought. Tha is if they are serious in hiring their managers.
