I dunno. You get this feeling when you are on the road and interacting with the other road users when driving.
I am not saying all taxi drivers are brutes. But a lot of times, when I encounter an unpleasant situation on the road, 7 out of 10, it involves a taxi driver!
Is it because they are on the road so much of the time that it is second nature for them to take risky turns, make dangerous lane changes ... etc?
Or is it a case of me being paranoid and not used to driving on the road?

Some drivers do have a bad temper as far as I know, and I agree with you that maybe that is because they are in the car for too much time and they have been bored with it. So when I come up with such a situation I would try to persuade myself to sympathize their feeling. Even some drivers do quite impenetrable and that would be the minority and most of them are good person.

Most taxi drivers are usually fast on the roads since they are driving for a living. It's either they rush or they lose their customers. I've seen taxi drivers braking suddenly just to pick up passengers or cutting from the first lane to the last, just to pick up somebody. That's how dangerous and desperate they are, without giving any safety regardless to others on the road

for me, the worst are definitely not taxi drivers. at the risk of being flamed, the worst drivers are always women drivers. i guess it's all about anticipation for taxi drivers. most times i'm alright with taxi drivers, as they are just like other drivers. they hog the fast lane, don't signal when changing lane and think they are very good drivers. whenever i see a person by the side of the road, i keep a lookout for taxis around me and i've had no problem with them.
as for women drivers, i totally have no idea what they are doing! i just cannot understand why they think the way tey do. so there is no way i can anticipate and avoid them.

Taxi drivers work with time. The quicker they move, the more money they will get. They seem to have the hang of driving so quickly. For us who are seldom on the road can not tolerate the way taxi drivers drive their taxi. I think it happens in other asian countries as well.

Hi ahgong,
I won't go as far as saying that most taxi drivers are brutes behind wheels. However you are right in your observation that generally taxi drivers are not very considerate drivers. I suppose it has something to do with their livelihood. Taxi drivers think they are entitled to stop anywhere they want to, make sudden illegal U-turns without much warning, cutting into your lane abruptly, speeding etc just to get passengers. Maybe tighter enforcement could change the situation for the better. I don't know.

Lucky me that I haven't experience one here in the Philippines. I ride the cab most of time when going to the office or just strolling around. I also heard some stories about taxi drivers giving back items that was left by his passengers. Some contains huge amount of money and electronic devices that you wouldn't expect to be returned to you once you lost or forget it. But I think the best thing to remember is that in riding a cab, we must remember the plate number so in case something wrong happen, we know who to trace. Here in the Philippines, it is important that plate numbers are visible and printed clearly. Also it must be printed near the window or in places that will be very visible for the passenger.

Here most of the taxi drivers are drunkards and gamblers; many don't have valid licence to drive; some are under age too, so accidents are common..

Some of them are but it's probably because they are stressed out by their environment as well as how fast they're going to earn for the day, that's why they try to drive as fast as they could and avoid traffic as much as possible. Especially when there is an oil price hike.
