The Goonies - one of the movies we grew up with

Not all of us, but at least some generations were the same age as the characters in the movie when it was released. And it was a blast! Back in the old VCR times, renting movies was my favorite moment of the week. It usually happened on Fridays and Saturdays, when it wasn't a school night. So I used to watch a lot of fun movies with my parents and some friends, from Disney movies and cartoons to old Hong-Kong karate movies.
Out of all those tapes we watched, i remember i liked the one with The Goonies (second movie on the tape was Gremlins, i remember it as it was yesterday). The movie had a very fresh feeling about it, the characters were interesting and funny, the whole story fit a 7 to 15 year old perfectly as our imagination was always stirred by pirate and hidden treasure stories.
Now that i look back, it had a very Scooby-Doo-ish feeling to it, with kids following a mystery, stumbling across trouble, messing up the plans of some bad guys and perfectly getting away with it. I loved the setting of the movie, the costumes and the scenography (especially the old pirate ship and all the skeletons :P )
My favorite character was the little chinese kid, the little "Inspector gadget", who never could get one single invention to function the way it was intended to, but managed to solve problems. Only thing that scared me about that movie was "The Thing". Poor guy wasn't bad at all but his appearence was so creepy it still gives me the chills when i think about those scenes.
Has someone else seen/liked the movie as well? If so, why did you like it and which character was your favorite or less favorite? Which do you think could be called the corespondent of the movie from the 90's or from the 21st century?

Hello, samd!
I'm glad to hear kids today still watch those kind of movies and also like them. I was under the impression that they were quite forgotten or considered too outdated to be watched anymore. With so many 3d fx today some refuse seeing old movies because they don't look "pretty" enough for them and aren't spectacular enough.
