Why come to this country?

Now, let me preface by saying that I'm all for multi-culturism, welcoming immigrants, and all that. We have a case going on here in Canada that basically is accusing a father, son, and mother, of an "honour killing". They allegedly killed three daughters, and the husband's first wife by pushing a car into the water, and drowning the 4 of them.
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1084356--dimanno-dad-in-kingston-murder-case-says-daughters-told-a-lot-of-lies
That's a horrible crime, no doubt about it. The reason he did it was the daughters wanted to be "Canadian". The father thought they were acting like wh**es, and didn't like them dating and going out. He called them liars, and believes that the honour of your family is in the hands of its women. How ridiculous.
I know the trial is still on, but, there is no doubt in my mind that he and his son, and his wife are guilty. I'm not going on a Muslim rant, because I believe that most Muslims are good people. I do question though why did he bring them here? Why did he come to this country to give his children a better life, then be so dishonoured by there supposed "whoreish" behaviour.
I don't understand why he would want to come to this country if he didn't want his children to act differently, and enjoy freedoms they don't have from where they're from in Afghanistan. He should have stayed there, maybe his daughters would be alive.

Right! Why come to Canada (or even the USA) if they hate the culture so badly? What WERE they here for? They had to know that their kids might want to fit in with everyone else around them! I’ve read about similar things happening in the US where the father and other family members do honor killings. I don’t think they love their children to be able to dispose of them like that.

The case is so bizarre, the father, mother, and son, just can't keep their stories straight, the prosecution is chewing the mother up. She's on the stand today.

Maybe his daughters would be alive... and married to old men!
How can anyone believe the mother's testimony? She's never heard of "honor killings"? Really?!

I know, it's obvious the mother is lying through her teeth.

I certainly hope so, we'll have to wait and see what happens in their trials.

My heart goes out to the entire family. I cannot begin to judge, who knows why people really do what they do. I can say that some people want to have their cake and eat it too...a perfect recipe for disaster. I just have no words.

I tend to think that the main reason that people come from other parts of the world to North America is because of the fact that we have a lot more freedoms here than people in other parts of the world have the opportunity to experience. However, what I do think that people who emigrate to Canada and The United States fail to realize in a lot of situations is that moving to another country is not only going to grant you with more freedoms than you've ever had before in your life, it is also going to completely change the life that you are leading.
Even though I believe this to be the case, I still don't think that you should ever punish a member of your family because of the fact that the life that they know and love is different from the life that you knew and loved in the country that you grew up in.

I couldn't answer to this question. I'd like to meet people from different cultures but some of them seem to come from another planet. In this case, without hesitation, they should tell them go home. But this is a sad story. Those girls maybe would be alive now in their country but what kind of life could they have there?

Hi bonbon,
I live in a multi-cultural environment, and yes, we've had so-called 'honour-killings' in our area.
I agree with you, there is no honour in killing anyone is there?
I've read of severed heads being put in black bin liners and just chucked near where children go to school. I read of chopped up females being stuffed into suit-cases and dumped near rivers.... To many to mention. It's horrible!
The awful thing is though - how the wives of the men who commit these hideous crimes - condone the crime - or appear to. It could be however, that they, fear for their lives.
I don't know what the answers are, except that it MUST be stamped out. The bullying of these women should be investigated more thoroughly too. The coercion that occurs in these families is barbaric.
The taking of young girls to India, then marrying them off to uncles (by brutality and force), cousins, and older men greedy for youth, is also horrendous.
What can be done about it? I don't know.

It could have been a cultural shock for these young girls and probably their first taste of freedom in a country where lifestyles are more open compared to where they came from. The man conservative upbringing did not prepare him to accept that the minds of young people could be easily influenced by their surroundings. It is unfortunate that these girls short-lived freedom were against their distorted religious beliefs.

I don't understand it, either. That kind of thinking is so sick, so messed up. But in moving to Canada they are obligating themselves to abide by Canada's laws which forbids murder.
The honor of the family is in the hands of the women? So the dad is blameless in the way he raises his children and teaches them right from wrong? That's what I find so disgusting about this particular thinking--men are excused from any responsibility no matter how they teach their children or discipline them. They are innocent of any lust for women because the women are to blame. This particular sect of Muslims are evil, evil, evil.
I know of Muslim families who DO take responsibility for their actions and people like that man are damaging the religion and making a mockery of it. Yet they don't see that because of their obsessive need to blame everyone else for their shortcomings.
I hope justice is done.

They all come for one reason to escape poverty and persecution. In the hurry to get there, they ignore the cultural differences. West has a very liberal attitude towards east, which is to be exploited for a good life, but that liberalism of life and conduct in the west is alien to their beliefs sinks in later. The religious and cultural dogma that is ingrained into them, over generations, starts to assert itself. The result is unfortunate incidents like this one. Taking lives is the only solution in some parts of the world where 'honor' is an issue. Blame religion, abject poverty or the primitive state of governance.
Any issue connected to their concept of honor, like promiscuity, stimulates their emotions, blurring their understanding of their present circumstances and they believe that the only way to retain honor is to kill, as their religious dogma sanctions it. At least this argument is used to justify their actions. Horrifying as it is, you will now find the people of their community rallying around them and screaming murder of their religious freedom as will some diehard liberals.
The only way out is to get each one of these immigrants know that the rule of the land is sacrosanct as is the way of life of the land. France has done a good job in this front, banning burkas. It has drawn a lot of flak but persisted and won. This is not a phobia against immigration, every culture has a need to be protected.

Well this is a rather awful story. I think that what people do not get is when they enter a new country and become citizens of that country, then they are citizens of said country first and foremost. Then again, there are people who observe a certain religion and a culture and then there are people who are absolutely fanatical about said religion and culture. And this one falls right firmly into the fanatical side.
But the fact is, when you go to a different country, things will be different than it was from where you left. There will be different things that would be considered to be normal behavior. That is true all over the world. If the situation was reversed, you better believe that the people would have to modify their behaviors. Yet, there are just certain things that defy all human sense and logic. A situation like this just turns my stomach regardless of the culture. Murder is murder.
