In earlier days, it was possible to start a Windows 98 setup from the DOS prompt.
So that, I was able to start my Windows 98 setup from a drive where I stored it, enabling me to get my computer started even if I didn't had that particular bootable CD.
Now how can I achieve this for Windows XP? Whenever I try setup from the DOS prompt, it says this program cannot be run in DOS mode?

What do you want to setup or do on a DOS prompt?
In MS Windows XP until the present MS Windows 7, it is called the Command prompt, it is the bare or no GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the MS Windows Operating System, and it is not a DOS prompt.
DOS is a Disk Operating System. There are different kind of DOS, it depends or varies on different brand of machine or computer. Like, MS DOS, Apple DOS, Ataris DOS, Commodore DOS, etc.

I want to setup windows XP from command prompt.
By command prompt, I mean to say, the condition when there is no operating system on the drive.

I wonder why you like on the command prompt? hmmm…. I think you missed the FDISK command and other basic commands line of the MS DOS era. huh . . . . . Well, they are gone now. When the computer makers starting to produce or developed computers at a fast rate of technological innovations with gigabytes of RAMS, terabytes of hard disk space, multi-processor CPU and so on, the FDISK command and other basic commands of the MS DOS are not compatible or obsolete. FDISK is only limited or can not functions very well to more than 64 gigs capacity of hard disk. It can not also function so well under NTFS. FDISK only good on FAT32 or FAT64 file system.
Well, if you still want to try run DOS commands on installing or setup Windows XP, your hard disk file system format should be either under FAT32 or FAT64 and not NTFS. Your Hard Disk space must not be more than 64 gigs. This will be good (I think) if you got an old computer. But, if it is not and your computer is really fit for a Windows XP, just be simple and practical.
Setup or installing Windows XP is simple and practical with a GUI. Well, There is a Command prompt, I think it is the Recovery function (not a DOS prompt) utility option before installing Windows XP.
