Of course they do~ I am not a doctor but I am sure they do know each other handwriting has there is no difference between them-Difficult to read, kind of worm type of hadwriting. I take that as their special ability other than know what our disease is~hehe(^^)

That's a good question. I'm thinking they would have to take some kind of doctor's handwriting class when they were in school if they did. I am amazed sometimes that the pharmacies can read it too! Maybe they have to go to a special class for it.

No, but I do think that the pharmacies and the doctors are in cahoots.

This has also puzzled me. The medical profession has existed for so long that you'd imagine the handwriting of doctors would improve now. Well, I guess their handwriting is in a class of its own so I think they could understand each other's handwriting.

Hi!
I am not a doctor, so I don't know if they can recognized each other handwriting, but I believe since they are use to see the terrible handwriting even with their own handwriting, they should be able to roughly or guess what they are writting.

Hi. I was under the impression that only doctors in my country write like that. But after seeing your discussion, I know now that doctors are like that worldwide! I think it is an unsaid rule for them that they should scribble and not write. Maybe they teach it in their medical colleges that they are not supposed to have neat and legible handwritings. Just imagine if they write this way in school, would they have been given good grades/marks? So it is something they pick up at medical college for sure. What do you think?

I have often wondered this, but the chemists don't seem to have any trouble so I guess there must be some common element, but I must admit you would think they would have to be clearer just to make sure everything is understood.

With the look out for prescriptions from physicians on most days, the pharmacist gains good knowledge of what is being scribbled (though illegibly).

I once wondered about that too. Maybe when they are in colleges, they have learned the same type of handwriting, therefore, they can know the content of other doctors, while others can't.

I wonder that myself but what I wonder more is how the people at the pharmacy are able to understand what the doctors have written. Sometimes I cant make out the words and I wonder how in the world they are able to figure out that handwriting that looks more like chicken scratch. It boggles my mind. I would be embarassed if someone saw my handwriting and it was that bad lol.

I think they can't.Most of doctors' handwritings on prescriptions are as illegible as hieroglyphics.I doubt if they do so on purpose in case the patients should take the prescriptions away and go to pharmacy outside to fill them.

I have seen some doctors who writes clearly. Infact, it is is considered unethical to write a prescription that is not clear and you should not accept anything that you do not understand. I am a nurse and if a doctor gives me a prescription that I really do not understand, I simply tell him or her to correct it or else I won't accept it.

I think they do recognize each other's handwriting because I have a few doctors that need to consult on my treatment and my progress after my illness. Plus if I change doctors one would have send my records and things so another doctor has to be able to read another one's handwritin.

Hello. I work in a pharmacy so sometimes we come across hand written prescriptions. They will usually be so difficult to read that I would have to squint to try to decipher what is written, or ask a colleague what she think is written on the prescription. It may be so bad that we have to call the doctor to clarify what is written on the prescription.
I feel that it is very important to have good handwriting when you are a doctor filling prescriptions because medicine given wrongly can be harmful to a patient, and all because of bad handwriting.
A person can die because of the wrong dosage or wrong brand name guessed due to bad handwriting. I understand that doctors are busy people but I think safety is more important.

It is a common allegation against doctors. But for your kind information, there are a lot of doctors who can really boast of their hand writings. I think if the hand writing is good, there is no problem in recognizing each other's hand writing but if it is really terrible, there is always a problem.

Yes, they can.But mostly between doctors who know each others such as doctors in a same hospital. And I know they have such terrible handwritings for two reasons. Firstly, they are always busy with dealing tense work so they need to finish writings as soon as possible. Secondly, it is almost a tradition among doctors and they may think it is cool. :)

Yes this is also a wonder for me from my childhood, as if this person with so bad hand writing could be a doctor , how can I not be a doctor.
But In my view in general they prescribe common sort of medicine or some time formula in general which could be easily understood by any medical store , and obviously not by common people.
