Wikipedia blackout

I just realized that wikipedia is currently closed down, I heard they were going through some sort of controversy. Though some wiki articles are not accurate, we cant deny that wikipedia changed our lives. It became a source of information created by the people for the people. Why wikipedia is currently in blackout? what is the issue they were going through?

Allow me to copy paste their own explanation Why is Wikipedia blacked-out? Wikipedia is protesting against SOPA and PIPA by blacking out the English Wikipedia for 24 hours, beginning at midnight January 18, Eastern Time. ... Why is the blackout happening? Wikipedians have chosen to black out the English Wikipedia for the first time ever, because we are concerned that SOPA and PIPA will severely inhibit people's access to online information. ... The complete detail is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

Its so disgusting this law is passedby an oldman who doesnt use internet. so he is ignorant how things go with the internet world. Its also ridiculous that the companies that supported this act actually created the filesharing softwares. so they create the softwares so they can use it as a trap and sue people.

Wikipedia is blacked out because it is raising awareness about SOPA. Other sites have done this too and basically SOPA is a bill that Congress is voting on. If it passes, there will be internet censorship and sites like wikipedia could shut down. Even Mylot could get black listed in the US.

The wikipedia is blacked out today 19 Jan 2012 to protest against the US governments decision to impose restrictions and censorship on websites. It is not wikepedia alone that is being blacked out. It is a shame to see USA resorting to these measures while preaching democracy to the world.

The Congressman who passed it is most likely to have no 2nd term, the whole America hates him now and his own state also hates him now.

The ambigiousness of that act is so disturbing, a person can be sued for covering a song or typing a song's lyric in a messageboard

Wikipedia is fighting against SOPA and PIPA. so do I. Why? we might go into jail from only quoting some article when SOPA and PIPA are active. We do not want piracy but not to limit freedom of knowledge.

I know that ,even writing a song lyric in a messageboard may even cause a person to go to jail because of SOPA, thats how ridicolous it was. I bet 50% of discussions here in mylot will be wiped out cos of Sopa.

Extracted from their prose : "Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout." Just disable Javascript or use a phone user agent, as mobiles are not concerned.

I still Cant bypass it, I just found out what they stand for, so Internet is on the verge of becoming a North Korea because of a Texan Congressman who has nothing to do with internet access.

I'm happy... - Or rather was many years ago in this photo...but yes I am happy...Wikipedia is returning tomorrow...I've missed it!
Yes, I really missed my Wikipedia today; but thankfully I can speak French, so I looked up a couple of things on Wikipedia France, which is not blacked out. By tomorrow, I believe normal service will be resumed.

Wikipedia was protesting the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) Bill that the US Congress are discussing. Among other things, the bill also gives authorities the power to block any website and IP address they choose. This means that sites like WikiLeaks and Wikipedia can be blocked. Some people see it as a way of suppressing freedom of speech.

I think things are being taken to far if they try to shut down wikipedia. I go there looking for information on things basically like a dictionary but with pictures etc. I have learned a lot from looking up things on wikipedia. I would be sad to see it go as it would be a lot harder to research all the information that is gathered in a group on wikipedia.

It was pretty hilarious with some people actually not knowing what was going on with SOPA even after they had visited the Wikipedia site. Some people just don't bother to read, lol. Anyways, I guess your question might have already been answered. They are having the 24hr blackout to raise awareness on SOPA, Stop Online Piracy Act. Read about it and voice your opinion. I definitely disagree with SOPA but it depends on how each individual looks at it.

I'm finally aware of SOPA and I think a very ridicolous law, the funny thing is that the person who passed this law used a copyrighted picture on his website. I found out this law can basically destroy youtube, Facebook ,twitter and even mylot.

For what I know, wikipedia is going black for protesting against internet censorship, don't know much more about that. I hope that they come back to normal, because wikipedia changed everyone lives, you can find everything there.

Basically Internet will turn into a "North Korea" because of Sopa, people will be sent to jail for non sense things cos of some greedy companies who wants to earn more money.
