Has anyone else heard about the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act? If I remember what I heard from somewhere in Youtube, these bills were supposed to combat piracy, but the thing is, if ANY site, even MyLot itself, is suspected of piracy, they'll shut down the whole website, top-level and all! These blacklist bills are the equivalent of throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
Overkill, much?
Now today on Jan. 18, 2012, a lot of websites are against these bills, and are blacking themselves out to speak out about it: Wikipedia (english language edition), Google, Mozilla, Electronic Freedom Foundation, the list is on the top oof the topic. I just wanted to bring this to y'all here. This is VERY important to everyone.

The law must not be one sided and should be made after consulting the experts.
Is this blockout is related to me getting certificate error on lot of sites ?

I'm well aware of both bills. And, I for one am not concerned about it. I highly doubt they will pass, because its impossible to goveron the internet. The bills are out there as a way to say, we're trying' but they aren't going to get very far. Really now.
The flaw, is where do you draw the line? What can you consider ligit? This is the problem with a lot of laws that are in affect today. The bill has a lot of factors to consider. and while the issue continues to exist, no one can truely stop it. I think its just a scare really.

I agree, but you have to know, this ISN'T about combating piracy. As I've said in another topic, it is about centralizing and controlling a money flow and having royalties. In fact, they may even start taking "protection money" for some sites to keep running. This is just another way for big business to get more money to do nothing for us and everything for their personal interests, and hey, it isn't illegal... but it should be.
I'll just finish with this: the regulations should be put on them, not the internet. Their act is the one that needs to get together and stop overpricing their products and making them more quality. Modern product quality in America is... so-so and fairly lazy, if you haven't noticed, especially from the movie industry giant, Hollywood.

I was just checking out Icanhascheezburger/Failblog,and see they're staying online (for now) but have popups for visitors with info on the PIPA issue..the info is directing US Citizens to contact their representatives in congress to complain, and listing their contact numbers..As you say,Baby and Bathwater...

I was just trying to listen to some music on www.playlist.com (I have a whole playlist set up for me while I'm getting ready in the morning, doing some kind of project, cleaning, etc) and I went to it just now while I'm doing laundry and NONE of the songs are working. ABSOLUTELY none! I am so suprised by this and I know it's not just all of a sudden all of these songs are broken links. I don't think so. It can't be a coincidence. How irritating for these sites to have to do this. And now I have to listen to music on YouTube (and listen to a commercial before every single song I listen to - AGH - how frustrating).

Wow, thanks for the information Duo. I just posted a discussion asking about SOPA and PIPA and I didn't know your discussion was here.
If it is a completely illegitimate site, and runs completely on warez and stuff, they might as well shut it down. But this seems too much.
I hope I don't see torrent go . . .
