If you don't know, SOPA is a bill that is being voted on in the United States Senate and basically it will allow the government to censor the internet. The bill is facing much public opposition especially from sites that have "blacked-out" for today. Even Google put a black box around its logo on the homepage to raise awareness. To me, SOPA is a violation of the first amendment that guarantees the freedom of speech. SOPA can easily block any site on a whim and even MyLot could become black-listed in the U.S. What do you guys think?

The SOPA and PIPA political supporters have just withdrawn their support of the bill as a result of the intense reaction of the people. They seem to understand the negative impact of these bills to the freedom of internet access. This bill is an unreasonable expansion of government powers and an infringement of the freedom of the people towards their right of self expression.

This is what I think: Smart people don't let the government have their way. If the government does decide to censor the internet, there will be something new that will be invented that will be like the internet but the government will not be able to control it. It will become powerful and then the government will want to censor that too and the cycle will go on forever. We must not stand down and let SOPA come forth but if it does, we must fight for an alternative, whatever that will be.
