Duke Nukem Forever: What went so wrong?

The majority, including myself was expecting something great and spectacular, and after a long time waiting, got something that wasn't quite... Duke. Gameplay becoming CoD aside, we have a lot of problems present in Duke Nukem Forever that wasn't so much in Duke Nukem. The humor was one of my largest turn-offs in the character presentation. The overall game gave a more dumbed down wit than in previous games and goes through excruciating lengths so you get the joke. In the original Duke Nukem 3D, Duke made a reference or pun and you either got it, or didn't. The other problem is repetition of the same gag routine, if it wasn't funny at first, lets do it again. In this case, how incompetent EDF is...
Now, I know people actually like Duke Nukem Forever, and it was an alright attempt but it just doesn't feel... like Duke... the character himself has been dumbed down... or over-exaggerated, it is inconsistent. Sometimes he felt like the old Duke but this was few and far between.
Now, here's the problem though as to WHY it doesn't feel like Duke: It wasn't made by 3D Realms, it was made by individuals who were laid off from work. They were into CoD and Halo and other modern games, not Duke Nukem, thats why, even though the designs are reminiscent and loyal (they had design models to go by), the overall game is not a Duke Nukem game. This isn't the only time outsiders have touched a franchise and deviated it greatly. Regardless, the company bought the rights and sold it right away.
Bear in mind, though, this is my opinion that it is "bad". But it is true that the quality isn't as great as it would have beenthanks to internal corporate meddling and cash guzzling. Duke Nukem Forever was also to feature the main antagonist of Duke Nukem 1 in the storyline concepts and could have been seen in early screenshots. Sadly this got thrown out for a more half-baked plot riddled with bad puns. I don't mean bad as in corny, I LOVED corny Duke, I mean just immature and dumb, like generic teen humor, we have enough to go around on the internet. Though, I suppose they couldn't get away with movie references and such like they did in the DN3D days due to copywrite laws? Oh well, this is just me ranting...
Now, what do you all think on this? Should outsiders be allowed to touch on a classic franchise such as this? Particularly ones who didn't really grow up on or care much for? Any thoughts on this are appreciated, I'm just a bit disappointed being a Duke fan. :(

Believe it or not...I loved the original Duke Nukem. Wonderful game and when I heard there was another one coming out this past year..I was ecstatic. I got it and to my surprise, so far, I have not got in to it at all. I am quite disappointed as of now. I keep thinking if I just make myself play it, I'll like it but after the first round with it, I haven't been able to make myself play it anymore. Aren't people notorious for thinking they can remake something that was great and it turn out to be awful?

You can't FORCE yourself to like it because the charm of even the character is gone in this. The humor is far more blunt rather than a reference. But the gameplay has suffered the greatest amount in all, becoming more of a Call of Duty rip than a standalone game style. The only thing I CAN give them props for is that the enemy models and such look pretty close to the originals and are loyal for the most part.

Hi.
Wow! You should seriously be a game reviewer! Don't they pay you for this in the USA? That's quite a detailed account; maybe you can help them develop the game better? I used to play the old Duke Nukem 3D when it came out here - maybe fifteen years ago now & got right through it to the very end. This took me quite some time! Now I'm not a big follower since, so I'm not aware of what went on behind the scenes, but by the sounds of it, I reckon it would have been better had they stuck with the original developers or at least those who could do the job at least as good as they did it back then. Sorry to hear of your disappointment.

Well, it was actually internal meddling, constantly changing their minds, and never deciding until when employees that got fired finished it on their own. These also were not Duke Nukem fans, these were CoD, Halo, etc gamers who had a vague idea what Duke Nukem was like, or just wanted to plug all the modern day concepts they could in Duke Nukem including modern internet teen humor. What we got was somewhat playable but an overall mess.

Well, on my own perspective, it should have been better if the original developers were the ones that have the greater hand in creating this classic game. I don't know why it took them so long to release the game, for years to be precise. The aura of Duke may still be there, but the core fans of the game like you and me have been on the brink of wait for so long, and has greatly affected our eagerness to play the game again. WE have been bombarded by new genres of gaming, involved in new breed of shooters, and most gamers think that Duke is now just a classic old school shooter. Some people think Duke Nukem Forever is for teens now, and not for mature audiences. as you have said it, the jokes are becoming too repeatitive and not so funny and off the brink or pretty lame. Myself didn't even get too excited and interested with it anymore. Its really a big disappointment also for me.

I hear you, and I can answer the question on what delayed it for so long: an indecisive leader. There is a video on this on Youtube somewhere that explains a bit on the internal affairs but to keep it short, it was because the head of the project could never make up his mind and wanted to hold it up to unrealistic expectations. It went through several engine changes, hand changes, corporate takeover, and finally fired employees who "finished it". The educational details are in a video though, is worth the watch. And dang, I thought I had it in my favorites... :(
