No Work!!!!

*Sigh It’s been 2-3weeks, since I started working in this new company… cool environment where people mind their own business and I don’t have any friend any here, I only bought my lunch from the café downstairs and eat alone in front of my PC while surfing the net. The thing that bothers me a little bit is that, I don’t have heavy workload like I used to have in my previous firm, I have a lot of time doing nothing, while my boss is always away either went to the court, meeting with client etc… I already sort out of things needed to be sorted out.. and my table is now free from pending works.. I don’t know what I should do after I settled all my tasks. I searched the net for my wedding reception but then if one or more of the lawyer pass by my desk, I feel embarrassed not doing anything but then what else can I do when I really don’t have anything to do? What can I do???

Oh I hate that too! A few years ago, I got hired by a big multinational company. It was a dream job. But since they had a lot of company policies, the first few weeks was spent training. There were a few classroom trainings, but most were online that I had to do by myself. Usually I would be done, by mid-morning and I would really get bored the rest of the day.

Then what did you do the rest of the day? Did you surf the internet? is it allowed?

Yes, I did a lot of surfing. I think it wasn't allowed, but even before they figured it out, I was out of there.

I like your job hahaha! they are paying you without doing anything. but i would advise you to be familiarize with their environment and what kind of work they are doing. Read some papers that are related to your job. If it is an law firm try to read their cases and if ever there is somethings that you don't understand search it at the internet so that you can learn and also gain some knowledge. try to learn some things of what they are doing. Observe and be familiarize. try also to read the company's policy so that they will think that you are interested in their work. :)

I am quite familiar with the kind of work they do since I have experience working in law firms for several years now. It's just that my boss is always out of the office and even if he is in, he always spends his time in the library with his chambee. I told my friends, but they say just wait and "cherish" this un-busy time, maybe I am still new in this office, so the workload is not so heavy yet.

Are you an employee of just that one lawyer, or the firm? If you are an employee of the firm, you could always ask the other lawyers if they have anything they need done. If you are just the one lawyers assistant, you could ask him of other tasks that you can complete before he leaves from his daily meetings. Other than that, I wouldn't feel embarrassed about searching other things on your downtime at work. If you have completed everything necessary at that moment, and you aren't viewing anything that could be considered offensive in the workplace, then what issue could they have?

I am the firm's employee but then I only work under one particular lawyer i.e my boss. Every lawyer has their own assistant. I am doing all his work that is not much at this moment. One day he ask me to send a file to the front office to fix it, since the cover is all torn/worn out. The front office staff just gave me cellophane tape and asked me to do it myself. So I took it to my desk. When my boss saw that he said: "why do you want to do that? you don't have to do that, let them do it. Or do you like handicraft?" . That's my boss. One day, he asked me to ask the librarian to photocopy a three pages documents. I could have done it myself but he didnt ask me to do. I told my friends, they were like "wow, I wish my boss is like that". Can you imagine?

Hi, this reminds me when I was doing OJT for college, we applied at the bank and every single day we are only waiting for phone calls. It lasted for about a month or so and it's really boring. My first week at my current job was also a bit boring, I just accept phone calls and sort calling cards, after a few days I was given a task to type a book from hard copy to soft copy. I nearly finish it 1 week, after that I got nothing to do again so what I do is I type one page then I delete it and retype it again so I will be busy. The computer has internet too so little by little I browse the web and just wait for my boss to give me a task. You can ask your officemate to help him/her on their task for you to be able to do something even if they are not your friend. That's what I do when I ran out of work to do and I gain friends with that. Why don't you try it.

I asked my colleague and she is willing to give me some of her works but only the easy one like typing and all.. better than nothing i guess

Yeah, that's far more better than doing nothing at all. Atleast you are not loaded in work, that's light.

I used to work in a company where all I do is to make research and call companies to offer our services. There were actually a lot to call but there were months where all the companies that I'd call have split timings. There were long idle hours - sometimes I would still try to call so I can still have work to do, but no luck since the managers will be out of the office at those time. What I usually do is to stare at the monitor only or doodle something on the paper. Do some research although I have completed my research already. It's really hard to pretend that you're busy especially when someone comes in. Just try to be attentive so that you can switch the tab when someone comes in your office.

Wow. I wish i was working there. Many people complain that there a lot of things to do, but you, you're different which is cool. You like to work. Well, if you have already finished everything, then maybe you can just surf the net, or be here in mylot. That way, you're still working online, right? See you around.

Yup, I was so used to being busy in my previous office that I feel awkward when I have so much free time in my hand. at least if I have one or two works then I can like type one alphabet a minute maybe? . Surfing the net is exactly what I do... but then I worry that maybe if the other lawyer see me, she will complain to my boss. Since I am still new here. This also gives me time to be here in Mylot and survey things for my wedding preparation. I go online to look for gown designs or anything, Youtube to watch funny movie... what a bliss, being paid for relaxing,

What do other people who have similar positions to you seem to be doing? I'm used to having too much to do as well, although right now I do have small gaps when I'm waiting for things. I usually rearrange stuff, tidy things up, and write stuff out.

Well, I think (this is only my opinion, from the way I see it) the girl in front of me might be like me... because I always saw her surfing the net or updating her status in FB.. It is just that the difference between us is that they have a lot of files on their table and I have none...

well, you can always make yourself busy by reading online or writing online. you are new to that job. probably, the company is sizing you up whether you can keep up with the job. well, you can do some things that can put your company in good light. for example, you can write on newspapers about your organization or simply anything and put your company after your name. i am sure they will appreciate it. goodluck.

I am new to this office but I am experienced in litigation stuff. Maybe as now I am the secretary to one of the lawyer, all I have to do is only his job but not others. I wish the other lawyer will instruct me also or at least they can give me one client for me to look after all the files like what i used to do in my previous firm...

Looks like you've got plenty of time to burn. This can be hard if you are used to have plenty of task to do at work. Do some research or ask your boss if there is anything else that they want to get accomplished that you can do.

My boss usually say "don't worry, don't worry". I'm just afraid my brain will get rusty from not working. I sometimes started to regret changing job but then my previous boss is too irritating. Many people I know said that they would like to trade boss with mt (this new job).

I used to have that kind of work before. That is also the reason that I moved out of that and looked for other work. It makes me rusty. But, I must admit that I miss those now workload days in my previous jobs as my current work is so demanding. But still, I don't regret the switch as I do feel that I am learning more now than before. Just pour out that time of yours myLotting then! It is a good thing that you've got the internet in there or you'll be really have nothing else to do. Maybe you can try online day trading in stocks if you got all the time in the world in that office of yours. That's what I have been doing before.

That's what I find myself doing... all day if my boss is not around. I make a serious face like I am working on something when actually...

Maybe you need to try to find more work or ask for more work. My dad works on his own as accountant and he has to work untill night. Its kinda the opposite of you :3

Hi, it is 22 years I work in an office environment and I changed few companies. In all environments I found myself sometime with a very low workload. Periods of months and I agree it was boring, however internet helped me not to get too bored and I told my boss about the situation. For him it was ok not to worry about and so I felt ok for my way of passing the day at work. i also tried to be interested in other things within the office and got few extra activities to do to help a collegue. When those periods went away I got back on heavy duty activities like today. I guess it is normal that during a career there are periods of highs and lows, the best thing is not to make a problem out of it.
