I was advised to check amazon.com, but I don't because then I'd have to pay out of pocket instead of my pell grant..But if I were paying out of pocket, that site might help you..

It may be too late now, but talk to your financial aid office before you begin your next semester. I'm eligible for Pell grants, too, and my school's financial aid office has a form that students can fill out to get part of their disbursement early to buy books from somewhere else. It's been a lifesaver with the new financial aid policies they introduced this year, since grant and loan disbursements are now made a week and a half after the start of the semester.

Thanks to you both. Good for you because you have those grants. Unfortunately, that is not my case. So glad you both can get such opportunity for your study.

Maybe you can ask around your school if somebody knows about someone who would like to sell his old books. Or maybe borrow from someone who had the same subject the year before or a few years before.

Alright! Now I'm getting all these great advises. Yeah, I hope my professor would permit me and hoping that no one else has borrowed the books ahead of me.

What I have found to be helpful is to get the textbooks out of the campus library which will cost you nothing. Another thing that I have done is to ask your professor if you can borrow their last edition of the book which most will do as they get those books for free and be glad to make use of them. Hope that helps.

I have not personally ordered textbooks, but others have said they get them less expensively online. I imagine you can find them on eBay. I would also check Amazon, and Alibris. Alibris is great if you are looking for a hard to find book.

I got my on half.com instead of the school book stores. The prices were much cheaper, and the shipping was always very quick. I think in two years I only had one book I couldn't find and had to get at the school book store.

I did the same thing and the prices were very reasonable a lot cheaper than the school book store. Then I was able to take my books to half priced books and sell them or to the school books store and sold them for more than what I paid.

I ordered all of my textbooks from Amazon.com this semester. Most of them were still expensive, but I saved about $200 by buying from Amazon instead of the school bookstore. One of the things several of my professors recommend is getting older editions of the textbooks. Here in the United States, the publishers come out with new editions of textbooks about every three years. They change very few things between editions, so you can often get by with the older version instead. One of my classmates in biology has the ninth edition of our book instead of the eleventh. She paid $6 for it, while the bookstore wants $209 for the brand new eleventh edition.

Wow! That's a lot of savings. I really appreciate our inputs frugalMommy. I think i should do that. In my previous experience, I always look for the newest edition and yeah didn't realize what you've outlined here. But yeah, thanks for your advise, will surely take it.

If you can't find textbooks that are required from your school that is cheaper. Try to borrow books from your school library. Set a date when to return the book, once you have the book find photocopying store which offers cheaper print per page. If not, ask someone from a higher level than you if they have this textbook required you have to borrow from them or if they want to sell, bid for a lower price that you can afford. If they agreed, then lucky for you, if not then you have still the option. You have to deal with them paying by monthly or weekly installments.

That'd be wonderful. But photocopying is not just allowed in our class. We value and respect the copyright of each book. I know the latter is more practical. Thanks, I'll ask around maybe they know someone who can spare me old books.

If the books that you need for your class aren't a new edition of the book, you might be able to find it used at the college bookstore, and that will save you some money. However, what might be able to save you even more money would be to check and see if you can find the books on ebay or Amazon. If they are new edition textbooks, the best place that I've found to get the textbooks for a cheaper price is ecampus.com.
