Hackers, are they really that bad?

Almost everywhere you hear that hackers are bad, they only do bad things and such. But is that really how it works? I don't think so, only a small group of them is doing bad things they, are called black hats. But the group with good hackers is much bigger. They help people that get infected by a virus on their computer by going into the code of the virus any making a sort of anti virus for it. They also have the same knowledge as the bad hackers but they use it to make protecting better by testing a system and helping the user be repairing the leaks or faults. So what do you think? Are hackers really that bad as the media says? Or do you think that the media isn't giving the hacking community a bad name?
