I think best option is bring USB DVD drive.. and then reinstall.. I am not sure with first option.. it may help you too.. but to boot your system you atleast need bootable pen drive with xp setup files.. and yeah copy and paste in C drive with system files won't install new XP in your system.. you must have to bring installation source from anywhere..

There is no way to backup your windows xp from your computer. If you have no DVD drive then try to install windows xp from a pen drive. Copy any windows OS software from you friends to your pendrive, You will need an extra application for the pendrive to use as a windows xp CD, you get that from the web, just search on the for more instructions. And lastly, don't try to copy the installed windows xp files directly from your pc, install a fresh windows XP.

I had to do this the other day. Depending on your operating system, I found my files at:
C:\WINDOWS\driver cache\i386.
Hope this helps. I had to do a reinstall on my computer with vista. I was able to recover my data before the full hard drive crashed. If I can be any further assistance please let me know.
