How the East view the West and Vice Versa ?

Before the internet was born little was known about people from other countries especially the western world. The little information I gathered from watching western movies on tv were not good enough to give me a true picture of people and their lifestyles. Movies from the west were and still are heavily censored in my country before they are screened on tv. The kissing scenes, fondling parts and shooting parts of westerns movies were cut as the censoring board of our country think that those parts are not good for our Asian culture. And we are still not the best people in the world!
I always think people in advanced countries like the US, England and the hosts of western countries are more superior than people from third world countries. My ignorance could have stemmed from past history as my country was once colonized by the British and they have instilled in the locals that they were the powerful lords and their words were nothing but law.
The internet has opened the floodgate of my ignorance which has kept me in the dark all those years of how I viewed the western world and the people that live there as blessed people who live in mansions, wear fine cloths and drive big cars. Little did I realized that anywhere in the world they are sufferings and joy like what I see everyday in my home turf. Interacting in mylot has given me a clearer picture that there are not too far difference between the East and the West in terms of livelihood. Unfortunately, some of us don't write as well as those from the west but comparatively our thoughts are similar in so many ways. If you are in this topic, maybe you can share your views, which ever side of the world you maybe.

I was born in England which is a country in the United Kingdom. From a young age I have been interested in different countries and enjoyed meeting people from other lands. I was 14 when I went to Greece, 17 when I went to the Netherlands and 18 when I traveled around Europe by train. It was fascinating to visit Hungary one year before the Iron Curtain lifted. I traveled around the world when I was 20 to 21 years old. Western Europe is expensive and Eastern Europe is far cheaper. They are catching up with us slowly and soon the whole of Europe will similar. I feel very at home in Australia and New Zealand. I feel sorry for poor people living in developing countries. I like visiting tropical places and attractive looking cities. I think India and China are becoming much better off. I like interacting and discussing things on wonderful My Lot. Money does not matter and each person has feelings.

You are a seasoned traveler. Though I travel too but have not been to any countries in the west. You have travel far and wide and am sure you can see the contrast between developed and underdeveloped countries. I wonder whether you have been to Malaysia? Malaysia is still developing but we are better off compared to some third world countries.

Hello my friend zandi458 Ji,
There is no question of East OR west for me. I will say I am the best and one should always remember this. How Britisheres thought about our country and whjat they applied to rule this I would like to bring following portion of speecch from British parliament on 02-Feb-1835
"www.indicohotels.com
“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India I have not seen one person who is beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.” Lord Macualays, address to the British Parliament on 2-2-1835."
So they did same for all places. My dear whichever place you belong , that is the best provided you remain with that cultutre. Please do not loose your basics.
May God bless You and have a great

Hi Zandi!
An excellent post!
I completely agree with you that before the advent of internet and sites like mylot and FB etc., we had little knowledge about people living in west. Whatever information we had that was based on books, movies and hearsay.
Mylot has really helped understanding the culture of other countries. It feels nice to know that most of users/lotters are more or like us and their behavior, thinking pattern, apprehensions and ambitions are similar to us.
I keep learning every new day, when I am here. Sometimes, it is great fun and enjoyment just to go through the interesting discussions, without sharing my own views. Some discussions are source of new information and knowledge which otherwise is not known to us.
I hope that I'll keep learning more and more about others here on mylot.
Have a nice day!

Hi Zandi,
I live in the States and I have discovered in discussions from other countries that we have more in common than we would otherwise have realized. Movies don't even come close to depicting what life is like here. While there are Americans that are wealthy and live in mansions etc...that is not what most of us are like. Most of us are just ordinary people living ordinary lives. The views of the political leaders does not always match the views of the ordinary citizen and we don't look down on 3rd world countries as being lesser than us at all.

I am fortunate that the third world country I come from is on a higher end and not in a deplorable condition as most people think of third world countries. But of course the mentality of our people is far behind compared to advanced countries. I am happy to meet people from some western countries who are so humble and friendly.

Very interesting topic! I think that people here have been heavily influenced about other countries based on what they have seen on TV and in movies too. The thing about the TV and movies that really bother me is they are very controlled. People aren't often allowed to see things that their government doesn't want them to see and I think that goes for most every place. Unfortunately what people see like that is often all that they know about other places. I have to agree that the internet has opened up the world for us to learn things we never would have before. I can not tell you how the things I have learned here from my friends from other places compared to what I have been "shown." I am actually thankful that I have been able to meet people in a diverse community and share the way we do here.

I think there is good and bad in every country...there are countries with incredibly wealthy people but if you walk around town and suburbs you will also see appalling poverty! those are the places the tourists never see! to me no one is better than the other[ the East or the West]poor or wealthy we are still human beings we all get sick and we all die when our time comes.
