I was advised by my OB to get a 50g glucose challenge test because my mom has diabetes. it makes me feel nervous when my OB told me that i might get my mom's sickness. from the moment i got pregnant, i crave for chocolates and something sweet. Me and my hubby decided to get that exam for our peace of mind. And think that my doctor can have remedy if ever i have diabetes. Then we got the results, it says there that the normal is 8.25mmol/L then my result is 9.20. That does mean I'm already diabetic? or i just have to lay off those sweets snacks? i already called my OB re: this, and she told me that she'll discuss it in person on my next check-up. I'm really bothered.

There are two possible reasons that your glucose level could have shown high in the results. One of them is that incase your blood was withdrawn too soon after taking the challenge test, the other would be on medical ground. In most cases, the oral glucose test is done after fasting glucose test which provides the baseline for comparison of results. This is more accurate than just doing a oral glucose test alone. If the fasting glucose is then proved positive, then probably you could be having gestational diabetes which is very manageable with food changes, exercising and possibly taking insulin shots. Having gestational diabetes still does not prove you are diabetic and mostly will go away after the birth of the child.

They took blood from me after an hour. I felt really sleepy after taking the glucose juice (should I call it juice?). Oh. I had breakfast when I took the exam. My ob told me that I'm not allowed to do fasting since i'm pregnant. Hmm. That really bothers me. I'll ask my OB regarding that fasting glucose. I'm afraid of having gestational diabetes, I still want a normal delivery. :/ Anyway, I'll update you after the check up. Thanks Mashnn! ;)

It is true that it is very hard for you to fast considering your situation but the problem is that, it is also very hard to prove whether you are diabetic only by just that single test. I suggest your OB might request for a repeat of the same test but this time the blood will be withdrawn within intervals like after one hour, after two and after three hours. This can be a better test. One thing for sure whether your are diabetic or not you need not to worry much about it and try to concentrate on taking care of your child. Diabetic is a very manageable condition and it happens to a lot of pregnant women especially nowadays.

Hi Mashnn, We're done with the check up yesterday. My OB told me that I just need to cut down sweets and less carbohydrates. I'm 2 lbs overweight. But it's okay for me, I just need to lay off some sweet snacks and less rice, it's okay rather than having low lying placenta. I thank God for this! :) I'm in a normal pregnancy now!! Cheers! :D

You probably have gestational diabetes. You just have to eat more fruits and veggies and switch from milk chocolate to ate least 70 percent dark chocolate. And cut down the sweets. It does not mean you will get diabetes all your life. But you mght be in danger at a lower weight then other people. For instance, some may have to get up to 300 lb before getting it, but you might only get up to 200 lb. I do not know your height, so I am guessing.

I'm 5'4, my weight now is 131 lbs. Before I got pregnant, my weight was 115lbs. I'm on my 25th week now. :) I already cut down chocolates, all the chocolates or any sweets in our refrigerator was already given to my father-in-law. Haha. It makes me sad but I know it's for my own good. :) I'm now changing my lifestyle, I see to eat that everyday I take fruits and veggies. And absolutely drinking lots of water. Thanks suspenseful! ;)

This is called being at risk of overt diabetes. 1mmol/L higher is not that bad. Most probably your OB will ask you to do some life style changes. Well, the fact that you have a familial history of Diabetes will place you at a higher risk of either getting into overt diabetes or gestational diabetes, once you are pregnant. In this situation, it is best to listen to your OB. 50g glucose threshold test is a one step way to test if you might be diabetic, but it is not an absolute yes. Why do you need this and why do you take this seriously? A diabetic pregnant women would place your future baby with problems that might be prevented with proper protocols. Survey says a diabetic mother will probably have a high chance of a baby being too large for gestation, this gives a risk of harming the baby, and yes a big baby does not mean a healthy baby. Other complications are such like congenital anomalies and many more. I suggest to talk to your OB and seek and listen to her. There is nothing to worry about as early as now! And proper lifestyle changes be applied. So do not worry too much.

Oh. Thanks Jacobus1919! I already did that, I stop eating chocolates. I'm also taking brown rice now and drink lots of water. Absolutely water. I hope I'm not yet diabetic. I want my baby to be delivered normally. Yes, it's my appointment next week to my OB and I will definitely ask her about this. Thanks much Jacobus1919! ;)
