In my school, the IT research facility also known as Computer Laboratory had their network designed to prevent students from accessing social network and gaming sites through the use of normal domain URL/link.
---
Note:
I really pointed out that student can't access the prohibited sites through the normal URL/link because students can still access the sites using different methods, not only using proxy sites but codes as well (For the computer degree students). According to them, "This is not hacking because they aren't breaking any code...they're just dodging security."
---
What do you think about this policy?

Hi SinfulRose,
Almost all college and schools banned the so called social networking sites and dating sites, but its not an issue to break this rule. By searching in internet itelf you will get enough to enter into this banned sites. As per me its not right thing to do, as we goto college for studying only, better we can use those sites in our home and outside.
College also can allow these sites can open after college hours like evening 5.30 , so that students may not try to use proxy in regular times. One hour per day is better, so it will reduce these kind of misconducts.
About the students who try to break the rules and entering into these sites are really intelligents, schools and colleges should pick them and encourage them in some other really useful things, so that they may divert their attention towards useful things.

I understand and like your idea but as you've said, if one just search the web, one can find the solution to some of their problems like the firewall that prevents their command call from leaving the school premise.
Students in my school don't need much intelligence nowadays to skip the firewall if the web already has it and already shares it to everyone. And if students were really intelligent, no matter what the school does, they won't be able to find them because anyone knows that they'll be "punished" if found "guilty".

Yes, of course the schools and universities with computer facilities and internet should ban unrelated sites that can divert student's attention away from academic stuff. It is a must or else, students will just hover on to their favorite sites and idle in there not paying attention to the lectures and information knowledge the school will be giving out. What is the sense of allowing such sites during learning time when these sites don't promote much learning? As for the evasion of security by the students, it is something that also helps them learn in a positive note. Trying to think and find a way for loop holes is a good thinking exercise for them in order to be adept in computer technology. However, I am against it due to moral and etiquette reasons. For the computer admins, it will be a challenge for them to block all attempts and evasion the students will try to expose loopholes in the security. The challenge and competition for that internet security is something remarkable. But still students are better off using those thinking skills in trying to learn the stuff the school is trying to teach them so that they will be more adept in computer skills rather than finding ways of breaching internet security.

if the school already has this policy then you should not access those banned sites in any way. school computer lab is there for learning and not for gaming and social networking. responsible students should know that and they should follow the school policies for goodness' sake.

i believe that students are in the school to study and not to waste time so i totally with the school to denied access even to internet when they are not studying, that is why we have students with poor knowledge because most of the time they are in social network instead of being doing homework, i will say that after they graduate and have the skills to work they can do whatever they want, meanwhile cannot.

The school has the right to ban those social networking sites and gaming sites. Students are sent to school to learn and not to fool around. They should abide the school policy.

I think that policy is ok. But as you said, students still find ways to access social sites. And as for me, this should really be banned from school, Computer in schools should only be used in searching, or doing assignments. So social sites should really be prohibited. Too bad, they can still access it. And for the students, I hope that they'll just use their own computers if they want to access their social sites.
