To my filipino friends... Do you think it would be a good move to raise the salaries of our government employees for them to avoid being corrupt?

Hi Grace, Corruption knows no bounds, high paying or not. Personally, I'm in a quandary how to solve the problem, it's been here before I was born and it seems it shall be here for the next decade or beyond. For that matter, I see corruption as an integral part of the system: we see it everywhere, in the family (when a household member misappropriate something other then for the common good), in the church (when the minister himself fails to live to the vows of his chosen vocation)... the list is endless. I should learn to live with it, who knows, I may find myself in the same position as they are now.

Like in one comment I read which I agree, have all the government officials (from barangay to president) salary to the minimum wage (base on what people are earning as minimum wage --- that will be like 13k a month) and we will know who among the government officials is really corrupt. That would really avoid corruption, because we will wonder whoever government official is that this is only his/her salary, how come he/she can afford this and that... right? Well, considering the family is rich, we will still know where the heck the got the money to buy other things if this is only the salary of an official. Just like the case of the impeachment, we don't the hell know where the wife got that kind of money to buy all that luxury... So, I say, have all officials salary to minimum wage, that would really remove corruption.. Though I do not know if this will be a good solution..

Grace beti I am not from your country, but i say, raising salary is NOT the solution, it is the greed, dishonesty that works , every day the vigilance and anti corruption department department catches many corrupt officials, most of them have very high salary.. Happy posting, cheers. Kalyani

Raising salary is really beneficial and a great help to a government employee but it is still up to the person if he/she wanted to be corrupt.Whether you raise or give a persona high compensation, it is still their choice if there will corrupt or not.Money really cause a lot of bad things like greediness if the person won't used it properly. Its still a person's conscience if they will do corrupt or not.

In most of cases, increasing salary of government employees is a key of prevent corruption for them-selves as well as for others. No one want to take more pain for fulfillment of their basic needs.

Yes, I wish that those government employees will somehow increase their salaries.. but as what is happening today, I guess that won't happen, corruption is all over the place. and this thing I know will not go anywhere.. I believe that as long as there is corruption, nothing will happen to our workers..Sad but true

no, it's not a good move. those who corrupt are already rich. but the more the have the more they want. how could they say that the low salary is their reason to corrupt if there are millions of private employees who earns lower than they do but they do not steal money from someone else? to stop them, take them out of the position and put somebody decent.

Corruption is usually due to greed. And one of the problematic things with greed is that it doesn't understand reason and knows no limit. If you increase worker salaries, they will simply think they deserve it and continue being corrupt to earn even more. Perhaps a better solution would be to tie a pay raise in with stricter regulation, so that they see more money for their work (i.e. they are valued employees) and harsher consequences for corruption (i.e. don't push your luck!).

Spikethelobster is correct. Increasing their salaries isn't an assurance that corruption would stop. It really depends on the person himself. If his moral standards are strong, even a small salary wouldn't make him corrupt. I've worked in the government sector for a while and I've seen both corrupt and straight government employees. One funny thing I noticed is that the higher-earning ones are actually more prone to being corrupt than the lower ranks since they're the ones who are approached by "connected" people.

Corruption is in the system and i human nature. having a higher salary might be a good idea to ease the burden of living but it will not ease corruption. It's more of a mindset and and attitude compared to simple fulfilling of needs (especially monetary needs). Sometimes, people saw being corrupt as being powerful and getting away with the law and the rules. Money is just an added bonus.

In the Philippines, there is no big difference between the salaries of the private employees and the government employees. Sometimes, government employees are even paid more and enjoy better benefits. Giving them a raise will not discourage graft and corruption. In private companies, it is not common to hear about graft and corruption because of the strict company rules and regulations especially when you happen to belong to the financial departments. There is also temptation, why not, but the strict policies discourage the employees from accepting bribes. If a stricter penalty is enforced for the government employees, then it might discourage them from the malpractices, however, if their own boss or superior is also guilty of the offense, he will not even take a second look. In order to put a stop to these corrupt practices, we, the citizens must not tolerate it. In our rush to have the documents we need to be processed, we become guilty of encouraging corruption.

raising the salary is not the solution to corruption.
