Have You Ever Planted Trees?

Do you think planting trees is the best way to fight pollution and global warming? I remember living in a township where planting of trees over a decade brought about so many pleasant changes. The climate underwent a gradual change and there is an increase in rainfall. Migratory birds started visiting the area. The number of trees planted were 4 million. I would love to transform this planet by planting trees. If all nations make a concerted effort we can transform this planet.

During my childhood days especially at school we were required to bring to school some seedlings to propagate and grow until they are available to plant. Mahogany trees are the one's we usually plant in the school backyard, along the sides of the road going to our school and to some private lots whenever the owner requests some to be planted. It is a nice activity to attend, and teaches every student the importance of trees, the benefits they provide and how they help control weather changes and soil erosion. After almost 30 years from that time, I can see now that almost all the trees we have planted are gone. If not by natural causes like a typhoon, where the trees were uprooted, or when it was still young an animal ate it or most were already cut by people. It is sad to see that not even one was planted to substitute those which were cut. The school still has some tree planting activities but most are now situated somewhere else. I hope more and more of us will plant trees to help our mother earth heal from the injuries of weather changes, forest denudation and illegal logging activities.

In our place we only have two seasons, summer and rainy season. We are geographically located in an area wherein most of the almost 22 typhoons cross. Every year we suffer from floods, strong torrential rains, landslides, and uprooted trees. The mountains here are almost bald, meaning there is massive illegal logging in our area and deforestation rate if faster than reforestation. And to think of that our government officials even gave permits to mining companies for mining explorations within the mountainous region of the province. Instead of giving permits why can't they just encourage or mandate the people to start planting trees in order to at least reduce the risk of mortality from floods and landslides. We all know that trees especially their roots helps in preventing soil erosion, thus reducing the risk of landslides. I think we all need to share a helping hand to plant more trees in order to protect our mother earth and ourselves.

I've planted quite a few trees in my time, but I don't think that's the best way to fight pollution. Trees, yes, but we can't seem to plant them faster than they're being cut down. If we really want to cut back on pollution, let's stop the "development" of farmland and forests that are cut back to build houses. We don't need new housing; we need to take care of the houses we have. Stop wasting things so we have to buy more and more. Stop driving all over everywhere when we don't need to. Stop buying something just because it's new. Cellphones, TVs and all kinds of electronics take a lot of energy to make, which creates a lot of pollution. Trees are great, but we can't stop there.

Planting trees now means trees after some time but the rate at which we are cutting down trees will have to come down drastically. But benefits of tree plantation will have the much needed effect.Trees do bring about a change in rainfall and climate to a remarkable degree. The sun can blaze away but the heat will be absorbed and the rainfall will cool down the climate.

I'm afraid I'm a bit sceptical that one township planted 4 million trees. However, I believe planting trees is a great idea for many reasons, those benefiting us personally and the community and planet as a whole. Each response I read mentioned the huge loss of trees planted so my ideas are just reinforced...EDUCATION is the key.

I will explain. The area I mention is over 13000 acres and it houses a steel plant. The CSR measure was to plant 4 million trees for each ton of installed capacity of 4 mn tonnes of steel every year. Now the steel capacity is going up to 10 mn tonnes of steel per year and so the tree planting continues. You are right when I mentioned a colony you do tend to disbelieve. The tree plantation was/is over a very large area which houses the steel plant and the residential colonies of employees and contract laborers.

Yes. I have planted many trees. It is true that trees make a significant change in local climate. In our place where we have planted many trees, there the temperatures even in summer are cooler than else where. Some times I have a thinking that we should have a plan to convert the barren lands in to forest with some planned and dedicated effort.

Plantation is only the way to save our lives for long time. We have planted some trees and mini plants in our village and as well as at our city's home. Plantation of trees and prevention of cutting trees must be a self mandatory action of everyone.

if planting of trees is done consciously then we can also allow allow cutting of trees in a regulated manner.

Yeah Arun, Thane was a terrifying experience and I never knew winds could be so fierce and devastating. A month has gone by and Pondicherry and Cuddalore yet to recover from the after effects. when I saw the devastated zoological park I felt like crying. The Pondicherry university which had so many trees looks barren and this summer will be really hot this time.

I had participated in tree planting activities twice already. It's one small way for me to help fight global warming. It gives me also a sense of fulfillment knowing that what I've done is also for my son and his children-to-be.

Planting trees maybe considered as one of the alternatives in fighting global warming and pollution but to best way to solve the problem is to have self-discipline for it was us who started the battle and we are destined to finish it.

I have never planted a tree before, but I did planted a green leafy vegetables which is mustard green, though it did not contribute to saving our planet in a long term, but in did it really saves our budget for a period of time, imagine to harvest and served the vegetables you have planted from the backyard vegetable garden in your own table to eat. That's a big savings for our family though.

I think planting vegetables and fruit trees at the garden can be a very nice and fulfiling thing to do , you can bring guests to the garden and enjoy it and also clean some of the air pollution. It also makes what you eat more healthy because of no poison was sprayed on what you have grown. Keep it that way.

It's a habit over here to plant trees with schoolkids. I did it as a schoolkid and so did my kids (except for the youngest). I really hope you won't transform this planet in one big wood. Other plants need a life too plus many people are allergic to the polls of these trees.

Trees really play an important role in our life and in this world. We need trees to prevent floods and to have fresher and clearer atmosphere.I used to join tree planting program way back in school. We went to forest to plant trees and help our Mother Nature in our own little way.Haven't try to plant tree or joining any tree planting program today.Maybe I should start by planting tree in our little back yard cause every little step or way to help saving our environment.

Anything that can help this only planet home of us is good. We have come to a stage in our earth's life that action is needed to do something to at least lighten the damage we do to it. Planting trees is able to stop soil erosion and to retain water as well as other benefits. It is not hard to do. It is our duty to preserve a good earth for our future generations. Yes, we all can make a difference if we want to.

you are right. we can see the benefits 1. mitigate soil erosion, 2. increase the water table 3. more rainfall 4. enable absorption of Carbon Dioxide 5. Get respite from the blazing summer 6.You Can add more.......

Yes I have been part of tree planting progams. It is a necessary part of fighting pollution and global warming but it is not enough on its own. There is so much industry these days that tree planting alone cannot save the planet. I live in Australia and when they cleared the land for farms they clear felled taking every single tree down. Over time they have planted one or two back on farms to give their animals shelter but the environment was forever altered. They are now talking about paying farmers to plant trees on their land. Some farmers see the sense in planting trees and some just see it as land they cannot use for grass or crops. We need to protect the forrests that still exist and grow new ones. The forrests are the lungs of the planet, they clean the air but it takes a lot of them and we are killing them off faster than we plant them.

Every forrest starts with a few trees. The problem for us is that we people do not value the environment until the damage has been done and when told the solution they do not want to give up land to the environment. However, if we do nothing the planet will die and us with it so they are being very short sighted. In Australia there is a fight going on between environmentalists and mining companies, politicians and everyone who puts money first. They have allowed miners free reign and in doing so have risked damaging the drinking water supply for a major city. They will probably fight over the science until it is too late because those who want the money care nothing for the future they will not live to see. Already they have damaged the water supply in a world heritage area, destroying valuable lakes. If they continue the way they are going they will damage the entire water catchment area they depend on for survival. Very short sighted of them in a country where drinking water is very precious and limited. Greed and selfishness will problaby rule until it is too late to save the environment. So sad to see this but until there are more people who want to protect the environment than destroy it there is little that can be done. I have decided to move to the only state where environmental politicians have power and wilderness still exists. I hope it remains that way for my lifetime. I would rather have less mining and more environment. I do not see the need to constantly update technology. I wonder if anyone will come to their senses before it is too late to reverse the tide of destruction.

Listening to you inspires me more." Forests are the lungs of the planet" is a slogan that I will remember forever but do you think planting of plenty of trees be the beginning of a forest? Its very difficult to stop the so called progress , industrialization and infrastructure but planting trees will find support everywhere.

Trees - Trees fight pollution.
Yes I believe trees can fight pollution. I just can't say if this is the best way to fight pollution but based on experience I find an environment rich in trees is basically cool and fresh. I love the air in the countryside where there are lots of trees because it is really fresh unlike in urban areas where there are lots of moving cars and engines and less plants so you can breath nothing but polluted air. I think it is about time that we plant more trees even in the urban area. I also believe we should stop cutting trees wherever place. Trees are very valuable in preserving this world.

Trees - I think that I will never see a poem as lovely as a tree...
Oh I like that! "Trees are the lungs of this planet." This is a proof how valuable trees are. If we destroy them it is just like destroying our own body because we deprive our bodies of the way to breathe. Indeed the trees breathe out the oxygen we need and at the same time they breathe in the carbon dioxide that poisons us so with this benefit, how could mankind ever disrespect trees by cutting the just like that?

Like my friend here says forests are the lungs of this planet and it breathes in carbon dioxide and forests will absorb the carbon emission. The important truth is trees breathe out oxygen so it is solution with two advantages and both go a long way in combating global pollution.

I do not think that my community has had a large effort in planting trees, but my husband and I have planted 4 trees in our yard over the last year. In a few years, when they give enough shade, they will help with our cooling bill in the summer so we will use less energy. Also, they help fight carbon dioxide.

Planting fruit trees is not a bad way of getting fruit (for this, please give me top marks for perspicuity and originality). And trees are good for combating soil erosion (I won't be offended if you don't give me top marks for originality for this comment). You remember that the inhabitants of Easter Island doomed themselves when they cut down the last tree (for their idolatry)? As for the battle against global warming, it's good to try, but if there is a battle, then we've probably lost it.

It's not nature that's divine, but the One Who created it. But succeed or fail, attempts to preserve it's advantageous aspects (if the globe warms by 10 degrees Celsius, there will still be nature - which will be much less our friend - if there's still an "our") on our part is more of a duty than the opposite. Individually, though, our future is not in nature. The Bible tells us in which of two places it is.

Yes I have but not the kind of trees you're talking about. I just don't have the space here, but if I did I would plant many of them. I want an apple tree orchard for instead, and some lemon, lime, orange, pomegranites, etc. The other trees like walnut, etc are nice to have too. If only I was rich, I'd have them all on my properties. For now I probably have to settle for the miniature type of lemons, etc. I might buy those instead, this Spring.

you can plant them in your own back yard or there is another option, to get involved by buying packs of tree plants where the plants you buy will be planted by the eco project managers. All you need to do is to buy as many trees that you can afford to buy.
