Company politics, betrayal or/and uncooperative colleagues

Eversince my working life I have had been involved (unintentionally) in company politics. If you have worked in a company where there is more than one person, I believe there will be politics. One earlier incident was in the Accounts Department. There was a male Accounts Manager (AM) and three female staff. One of them was me. After a year plus there was a change in Management. A new lady AM was hired to replace the male AM who was being 'frozen'. I didn't know what actually happened. One of my colleagues who was the sister of the ex-AM told me to do my work accordingly like usual. No need to listen or do extra work if ordered by the new AM. Since she was the supervisor my senior I followed her instructions like usual. Soon enough we were called up for questioning by top management for being uncooperative with the new AM. I was very straight forward and blotted out the actual facts. But the sly supervisor denied. Maybe (I am thinking) she felt I betrayed her and she accused me of deceit. Is it betrayal for telling the truth?

It is not a betrayal to tell the truth but I wonder why you had to listen to her in the first place. It is always better to decide and do what you think is right and avoid being influenced by others. Otherwise, you will always find yourself on the wrong side of the law and no one will be there to support you. Most of these co-workers can lead you to a deep pit if you are not very careful. I just hope you were able to solve the problem amicably.

Hi Mashnn, thanks for your care. I was able to solve that problem. I had listened to her because she was my supervisor. She seemed kind and taught me a few things. Then I really thought I should only follow her instructions. I was so naive and stupid. Through the years of working in the office I have fallen into many deep pits. Life's like that working in the office right?

It happens at the workplace. You should never go by words as the words can always twist. You should have black and white proof to show it to the top management. The corporates will only believe on documents and video recordings. They will not believe in words. I suggest you to observe the supervisor silently and gather as much evidences to prove it to the management.

some say "less talk, less trouble". whether you are new or an old employee, it is better to avoid joining factions in the workplace. that will not bring anything good. if you are in the boss's faction, they will badmouth you if you get favors or promotion. if you are on the opposite side of the boss, you probably will get no promotion. unless it is necessary and unavoidable, play safe. do your job, do what is right.

Talk more, talk less different people different point of view. When in the office talk about the job not the people. If you wanna talk about people, talk about celebrities. If you are working in a place with many people around it's only natural to wanna mixed friends and talk. Even if you wanna be a lone ranger, people may say you are proud. You may do what is right .. you think you are doing right but in others opinion you can be not right. Well, it all depends on circumstancs.

It's really very hard to get caught up with office politics. Sometimes even when you're not intentionally siding with a person or a group, you'd still be accused of doing so. I guess the best thing to do in situations like this is to just do your job properly. Like in your case, your supervisor said that you shouldn't listen to your new Accounts Manager. That's actually not doing your job properly if you followed your supervisor since the manager supersedes any instructions given by her.

When you stand for the right nobody will support you or back you. You should only trust God and yourself.
As I said, you gather all the evidences against the supervisor and present it to the Management

Hi deodavid, it's nice knowing that someone would say what i did was right. This incident happened long ago but I am still concious about it. Now I think I feel much relief. Thanks! That was my first office conflict. Just to think about it now, the AM should have solved the problem within the department instead of going straight to the management. Hiya small matter cannot solve ah how to do big things huh? :)
